It is not a question of finding some mythical class of honest lawyers or public servants. The Constitution already contains every structural protection necessary to restrain government power <> but only if the Citizen accepts the burden of enforcement. That is the meaning behind Franklin’s warning: “A republic—if you can keep it.”
When citizens grow apathetic, complacent, or deferential, elected officials predictably expand their reach. They will spend beyond limits, legislate beyond authority, and ultimately extract from the taxpayer whatever is required to sustain their excesses. The result is visible in the national balance sheet: more than $39 trillion in debt, accelerating toward $44 trillion, because too few citizens are willing to hold government to account.
A self‑governing republic cannot survive on the assumption that someone else <> lawyers, officials, or self‑proclaimed guardians of the public good <> will do the work. If the taxpayer refuses to keep the government’s feet to the fire, the government will eventually take the taxpayer to the cleaners.
