The response to this has radicalized me. Most are calling Sasse out of touch and claiming that if we provided free healthcare/childcare/housing or otherwise made life more affordable, fertility would increase. I am very confident in saying that as affordability increases, all else equal, fertility will continue to drop. The spattering of free stuff above would knock it to zero for a good portion of the country.

Candy crush, sure, but maybe also maternity leave policies being mostly trash (big companies like @Deloitte cutting it to 8 weeks?!) and postpartum care/healthcare being mostly trash and lack of support/stigma around needing help and daycare/living costs skyrocketing are part of it, too. And the world might be richer than its ever been, but for who?

Very interesting that when I talked about this trade when it was made, the people who were on board and loved it told me I can’t make any comparison to the two players because Marcus Semien was not “replacing” Nimmo. And when I responded by saying well, depending on how the two players are doing at the time, that’s how those questions are going to be framed. I was told that I was an idiot and didn’t know what I was talking about and shut up boomer.
