Joe "Iron Man" McGinnity was born in Cornwall Township, Illinois, on this day in 1871. His father Peter, who was originally from Dublin, was a coal miner. ☘⚾
McGinnity made his major league debut in 1899 and immediately made an impact, leading the National League with 28 wins in his rookie season. In one of the most incredible feats in baseball history, he started and completed both ends of a doubleheader three times in August of 1903, earning six wins in just one month. His best season came in 1904, when he led the league in wins (35), games pitched (51), shutouts (9), saves (5), and ERA (1.61).
Over the course of his career, he led the league in innings pitched four times and wins five times, finishing with a lifetime ERA of 2.66.
McGinnity retired from the major leagues in 1908 with 246 wins, 3,441 innings pitched, and an astonishing 314 complete games — all accomplished in just ten seasons. But his love for the game didn’t end there; he continued playing, managing, and owning teams in the minor leagues, even pitching his final professional game in 1925 at the age of 54. In total, he racked up over 500 victories between the majors and minors and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946.
