India now exports a huge number of smartphones. But do we really make them in India? No. More than 80% of the value of smartphones 'made' in India consists of parts imported from China, Vietnam, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan. And even the value we add here is not really manufacturing. Most of it consists of FATP - Final Assembly, Test, and Pack - which counts more as industrial 'services'. So we are still far from Make in India in the proper sense of the term.
