@james_xond Then an annual fee would be the average cost of an accident, plus admin costs of insurer. So there would be no advantage in getting it No accident - pay nothing Accident - pay more for an accident (on average) so no point.

@james_xond Not sure you understand how insurance works fella. That’s a great idea if you want insurance for everybody to go through the roof. Not such a great idea otherwise.

Not everyone will agree with this, but car insurance companies should be refunding safe drivers at the end of the year if they haven’t had a single accident.

@contrary_owen @Bedeapk Yep - agreed & understand the punter ultimately pays the license fees and transaction taxes. But winnings are not seen as income & taxed at the marginal rate (or a "cgt" applied) so the point that @Bedeapk is making is true at a gross level as most people would appreciate it

@dmsbriz @Bedeapk Yeah but like any tax the economic incidence may not reflect who’s legally paying the tax. If the taxes were lower, punters would collect more as bookmaker margins would be wider. The net effect operates like a tax.

@contrary_owen @Bedeapk It’s not a tax on the winnings - assume that’s a tax on the transaction and license fees.

@neonnette So common in Australia that it has a term "Cakeage" and is usually $5 - $10. Fair enough - somebody has to cut it up (usually) and wash the plates and forks. Anywhere else use the term? "Corkage" came first - cost of bringing your own bottle and restaurant provides glasses

Cake cutting fees are standard fare at nice restaurants. When I worked as a pastry chef, we charged $16/person, which was the price of our cheapest dessert. You get to bring your cake in, the restaurant doesn’t lose money on dessert (and they cut and plate it for you, too).

This is the moment it kicked off in the Basque airport. You can see the flotilla activists made a line across the exit that blocked other passengers. The police tried to make a space for them to get through. The protester shoved the police and it started.

My thoughts go out to Tulsi Gabbard and her family, as her husband battles this serious health problem. I hope and pray that he makes a speedy and full recovery. While the circumstances around her departure are deserving of our sympathy, let’s be clear: Tulsi Gabbard’s only positive contribution to our nation's national security is her resignation. She politicized intelligence. She dismantled critical agencies keeping Americans safe. She weaponized the IC to pursue baseless election fraud claims. And more. We must ensure that her tenure — marked by a devotion to the person of the president and not to the security of the country — represents a terrible exception at DNI and not the new normal.

@NolteNC @williamfleitch Yep. Often rated by fans higher than ROTJ, but always in the top few. Great characters, great story, tight; not a minute wasted. Jyn Erso’s arc is believable & her motivations clear. Film adds relevant back story to plot and characters in eps 4-6 etc etc

@williamfleitch you attack the fans in your Star Wars piece but fail to mention that fans love Rogue One, which is led by a woman and non-white characters.

@RobProvince Not a boomer but when my wife and I were saving for a house deposit I (we) took lunch every day for years. Leftovers / sammich etc. Buying lunch was a carefully guarded luxury, not a convenience. Still is really. My wife took lunch today

Again… every previous generation of middle class did this but I guess you’re just too good for it. Please stay in California and continue voting for Democrats. Just promise never move out of your state.
return•of•the•mach@Lmachain1

@CELTIChistorian @RobProvince Yes. Budgeting is good. Learning to cook is a necessity. But if your plans for the middle class is for them to eat for years nothing but 2$ sandwhiches while they save for a house, this country is fucked.

@Rochetown01 @Ryandally08 @Australgally Unfortunately that was my point. First you go “oh no that’s terrible those poor people, who would do that?”, but then you get new info and think “oh yeah, they do that. Such a shame for innocent family, but here we are importing it”.

#BREAKING A newly arrived Bangladeshi national has gone on a murderous rampage in Sydneys western suburbs last night, brutally murdering his 46 year old wife and his two sons, aged just 12 and 5. It’s understood the perpetrator then calmly contacted the Police after the murders to alert them to the fact. Police found the bodies of his two sons, and his 46 year old wife inside, shortly afterwards. They suffered from significant laceration injuries that were too graphic for the source to fully reveal. The Bangladeshi man, was taken into custody and charged with three counts of domestic violence murder. He did not appear in court when his matter was briefly mentioned by solicitor Jawad Hosain. Hosain declined to comment on whether the accused killer had a history of domestic violence, drug use or mental health issues. “How could you do this? They’re babies. Babies” one neighbour remarked. Diversity is our strength.

@disco___cat This is the intended consequence; they have removed some potential buyers (i.e. decreased demand), so prices should fall or at least increase at a lower rate. I'm not a fan, but this is a feature of the policy working as intended not a bug.

Strange, we were told repeatedly that investors had nothing to do with owner occupiers being locked out of the market or having to take on gargantuan mortgages

@BJRush3 @disco___cat That last bit is true though; if bought by occupiers not landlords, they're not rented. I don't like the policy, but your boomer is right it won't create supply, it will decrease demand, which should depress the value of some assets while generating tax - which is what they want.

@disco___cat I had a boomer yesterday trying to argue with a straight face investors exiting housing markets does "not create supply" because the house gets bought. He then claimed it puts supply pressure on rental markets because one less rental is available......

There were all these things pre-internet I knew as a kid about Star Wars -- Darth Vader was a Sith, the emperor's name was Palpatine, Vader got that way from falling in lava -- that was never said anywhere in the original movies so I never understood how we all knew them.

Question: if you are invited to someone’s house for dinner would you consider garden flowers in a jam jar like this an acceptable small gift? My host says don’t bring wine or food, I don’t like shop flowers, I can’t bear being empty handed…
