@pstanpolitics Yes, after being crushed (or self-marginalized), they were unable to provide radical alternatives that ultranationists or Islamists could post-1991. Aasim sajaad akhter's politics of common sense is a good primer of this process in Pakistan, imho.

@dnaseemullah Left got violently crushed by the right in some contexts, marginalized itself in others (see: 1980s Philippines). Unable to recover almost universally, though, even after end of Cold War.

I learned a ton about leftist insurgencies - and their relationship with electoral politics - for this @cps_journal article a couple years ago (Open Access for anyone who really wants to geek out on the CPT, CPM-ML, etc); journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/00…

thanks @GerardoMunck and @palmer_rubin for highlighting this work, a labour of love that arises from discussions in graduate school seminars twenty years earlier.

Cardoso & Faletto proposed a historical-structural approach to the study of development. And this article by @dnaseemullah discusses the political economy of development & calls for a revision & updating of this approach. An interesting read. Open access: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

About 50 years ago I submitted the dissertation which became the book Power and Powerlessness in an Appalachian Valley. I am delighted that @GabeSchwartzman and I have just submitted a new manuscript which picks up on where the previous book left off! @illionispress

Despite significant differences in context, their playbooks reveal a global appeal of right-wing populism in channeling discontent across the world today. @dnaseemullah and Pradeep Chibber explain this eloquently in their recently published book: global.oup.com/academic/produ… 5/5

Donald #Trump and #Prabowo Subianto share striking similarities as right-wing populist leaders. Both built their political brands on nationalism, strongman personas, and promises to upend the establishment. Here’s a quick breakdown: 🧵 #populism #indonesia #UnitedStates 1/5
