School district boundaries are perfectly appropriate as mechanisms for governing and rationing traditional public schools. But those boundaries must be porous, not trapping kids in schools.

I have raised this multiple times. What parents can complain about needs a huge overhaul. I’m not suggesting there shouldn’t be any complaints but the whole process at present is beyond flawed.

The reason schools don’t enforce real consequences? Students would leave. And when students leave, funding follows. We have kids who refuse to give up their phones… and we hand them right back at the end of the day. 1st offense or 50th, it doesn’t matter. If it were actually taken for a month, many would walk out. So instead of changing behavior, we lower expectations.

@eduleadership Absolute nonsense! Restorative practices are poorly researched (obviously 21st century research standards) and very poorly analyzed. They do at times reduce suspensions, arrests and expulsions, but they don't do SHIT to disruptive, deleterious behaviors.

Yeah none of this is true, sorry. Nathan is a great author, but this is one of the most firmly discredited ideas in education. Traditional discipline works. Restorative practices don’t.

I managed to slowly work up to having sections of Algebra 2 in my middle school. Had it for a few years with marvelous success - 98% advanced on state test, but I had to drop it. You see, the high school had a math faculty with 9 folks on it and only one was certified above Algebra 2. One! The lost opportunities for my kids were a gut punch.

Houston ISD (the largest district in Texas) is doing the same thing. I would love to see districts develop a true accelerated math program where Calculus is taught in 8th or 9th grade. Calling Algebra I in 8th grade an "advanced" math model is insulting to mathematically gifted students.

I wonder what it’s like to work in a school where students are where they are supposed to be and not aimlessly wandering the halls. There was a group today playing a version of ding-dong-ditch where they went running down a hallway knocking on every door.

@eduleadership There will be counterarguments, largely from loons, but this former principal mandated keeping track of any kid going anywhere in my building. I am galled at the ineptness of principals who do not endeavor to create the same safety. Incompetents!

It’s not creepy to actually pay attention to the location of the students you are responsible for. Coordinated bathroom meetups, phone use, vaping, and worse are real problems. Schools need to know where every kid is at all times. Is there a counterargument?

@TolentinoTeach Professional development for teachers needs a serious reexamination. It truly needs a very serious assessment as to its purpose and effectiveness.

Can we please stop “modeling” classroom strategies during professional development as if teachers are students in the room? Do we really need to find our “sole partner,” complete another icebreaker, and pretend we’re in a simulated lesson?

On a hunch, I visited the Minneapolis Star website and looked through it for maybe thirty minutes. I found NO stories at all about $ billions in Somali immigrant fraud and nothing about their squad member's legal issues. Is the entire city complicit? Other Minn papers and broadcast media are on tap for this evening.
