been seeing this on the TL since yesterday. Let me address it. Like you said, she had a scan recently. There is no reason she should be sent for scan in labour to estimate gestational age/weight or anything. And even if they are concerned about the placenta site, that should have been addressed at 36 weeks max!... It boils down to the fact again... how many hospitals have ultrasound scans in he labour room... and how many doctors/Obstetricians can scan? Every Obgyn around the world must be proficient in scanning... The only reason they should send to the ultrasound is if they suspect a concealed abruptio placenta or they are worried about an unstable lie or multiple gestation with complications or a dire emergency where surgery may be done and care must be in place. A midwife must accompany a woman in labour for a scan... especially in tertiary centres. Labour can be anywhere, in the labour room, gates of the hospital, theatre, car and in your scan room... its better safe than sorry... This boils down to guidelines that must be followed. However, sending a woman in active labour as you said means she has been examined and she is 4cm and above dilated with contractions... I don't think anybody will send that kind of person for scan. The people who are sent to you are people who they think are on early labour and they progress rapidly in your scanning room. No one sends or no one should send women in active labour to the scan room. And Yes, as long as you are an obstetric sonographer, you will see women who come for ultrasound and do into active labour...
