VIDEO | Nagpur: On cough syrup-linked deaths, Consultant Nephrologist and Kidney Transplant Physician Dr. Pranaw Kumar Jha (@docpranaw) said, "It is a very sad incident that has happened, and as it is coming in the news, these patients were children who had a cough, for which they consumed cough syrup, and then the tragedy happened. Basically, in these cough syrups, substances like glycerol are used, which are non-toxic, to sweeten them and make them a little thick. But in this particular cough syrup, there were toxins like diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, which give same properties to the syrup but are toxic. In India, wrong-side driving is rarely punished—either the police don't notice, or they take a bribe and let it go. When crimes go unchecked for too long, they become habits or even entitlements. Applies to wrong-side driving as well—offenders feel so entitled that confronting them leads to arguments and abuse. Kuldeep Thakur, the driver, had multiple challans for wrong-side driving. Had he been jailed for the first offense for a year or so, this tragedy might have been avoided. Even this time, he was released on bail the same day! Shri @nitin_gadkari, there are various technologies available to curb wrong-side driving or to warn other drivers, such as radar, infrared, flashing lights, sign boards, radio warnings, etc. Can we think of this as priority?
