We hope the information presented in these guidelines will help clinicians, researchers, and educators in their approach to patient and family engagement. We thank the many people who contributed to delivering these guidelines for our binational community. Here is a potential consumer quote from the guidelines: ‘To all researchers, I extend this challenge: be as brave and vulnerable in your engagement as those who survive a critical care experience. We entrust you with our stories and our scars. Your task is to meet that courage with humility, curiosity, and commitment.
