@donbondi

loved sport and writing about it since I was knee high to the proverbial grasshopper and admire people who do things I can only dream about

@RonnyLerner Volk was asked about this at his post fight press conference, people regarding him alongside Fraser and Bradman. He says it’s nice when people say that but he doesn’t think like that about himself. I think he’s up there. Some people just don’t like or respect combat sports

Simply over the moon. My wife and I became grand parents for the first time tonight. Little Eleni came into the world. To say we are so happy is an understatement. Greatest gift.

@DanRafael1 Spot on Dan. Here in Australia most people wanted a Fundora rematch and didn’t complain when he accepted a title shot. Now after his loss many are saying he needs some domestic fights. No doubt they will moan if he doesn’t fight someone in the top 10 next!

Too many so-called #boxing fans are ridiculous. -- Fighter comes off loss, takes tune-up & fans rip him for fighting a nobody. -- Tim Tszyu comes off loss, insists on legit fight albeit vs. titlist unknown to most, gets destroyed & fans rip him for not taking a tuneup.

@VinceRugari Poppa has done better in Asian club football than any other local, but as much as I’d like to see a local get the job the FA needs to look both here and overseas. Whoever gets the job faces a tough task as are short of star quality.

Have been asked a few times who I think it’ll be. The chatter has been Popa from the start — however, he has just moved his family and life back to Europe, I believe, so it’s not a guarantee. But it’s looking pretty likely.

@MSainvill @MichaelBensonn More like a perfect game plan! Anyone who has seen Paro in the past knew he had the skills to derail Matias, who had no Plan B when he couldn’t put his usual pressure on.

@MichaelBensonn I hate when upsets like this happen 😒 boring game plan derails big fights happening, but I think if subriel gets his mind on the right targets, he can be a star.

@VinceRugari Well if they are at the Magpies centre not sure what else we would expect. Surely there must be some non AFL or Australian rules aligned area in Melbourne visiting teams can use where Sherrins aren’t available.

@Gatty54 The Mariners should be the most admired club in Australian sport. They don’t have the resources of most other club across the different codes but they keep finding terrific coaches and unheralded players. Great to see a club outside of the state capitals doing so well.

WHAT A RIDE. Of course not silly enough to believe it will last because things can change so quickly in football. But the Mariners epitomize all that is good about Australian football and about community faith and involvement. I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts!

It shouldn’t be on players like Scott Boland to educate others but it does speak to the importance of diversity. Kudos to Steve Smith for listening & using his platform to speak up. Incredibly proud to be represented by a captain and human like Pat Cummins. #changethedate

@OptusSport I’ll agree with the first paragraph but not l the last two. There’s been some bigger ALW crowds but nothing staggering. The World Cup proved we are an event nation not a football nation. That will only happen when our domestic leagues average over 20,000 to ALM and 10,000 to ALW

@VinceRugari I’m all for giving inexperienced internationals and fringe players a chance but surround them with some first-choice players. Starting with your second XI and all your stars on the bench is asking for trouble.

Big agree with Harps. I really hope Tony G isn't going to make big judgments on individuals off the back of this. No chemistry, the weather, the surface - what chance do they have? This is partly why folks have been calling for more gradual rotation in tournaments.

@Omnicentrist The best way to appreciate this iconic Australia site is to view it with your own eyes rather than through a camera or a phone. I’ve been to Uluṟu twice and like everyone else took photos but the biggest wow factor came through looking at it directly,.Definitely worth visiting

How many people have been to Ayers Rock. Is not what you think, no Aboriginals near the place. You pay a fee to get in. Only two places you can stop to take photos, because then you have to buy the good ones. Everywhere you go except for certain paths is native land. It’s a business.

@VinceRugari Mystified as to why he persisted with the high line as it was a massive fail and Chelsea could have had six or seven. Will be fascinating to see how he copes without some key players in coming weeks.

adrian warren@donbondi

@isobelcootes @OptusSport It was cute the first two or three times but now it’s cringeworthy. Some of the blame definitely goes to the TV networks who insist on showing these signs every time the Matildas play. As a kid I would never have dreamt of asking for kit. Parents need to do better in this space

@Mike_Tuckerman @thepiesrule @AFL Think you’re being harsh Mike. The AFL is far and away the best attended club competition in Australia and will never suffer from lack of interest. If only you could say the same about the A League…

@thepiesrule @AFL I don’t care about @afl though… and on the basis of what I saw today, many of us never will. You’d imagine that should be a problem for the sport as a whole, but I just don’t think they can see it.

I know nothing about @AFL. But watching that #AFLGF as a neutral who watches one game a year, it was very hard to escape the feeling - from the umpiring to the commentary to the whole event - that everyone really wanted Collingwood to win. It’s just a sport for Victorians.
