My abortion is the kind people love to judge the most. I wasn’t underage, I wasn’t assaulted, and there was no medical emergency. I got pregnant because I knowingly had unprotected sex, no accident, no rare failure, just my own choices. By their standards, it was “irresponsible.” I knew abortion was an option, and I took it. Not because I couldn’t survive it or raise a child, I simply didn’t want one. I wanted sex without becoming a parent, and I chose not to carry the pregnancy. There’s no redemption arc here. I don’t regret it. Nothing terrible happened to me afterward, no punishment, no downfall. My life is still good. @theblessedsalt @hEachthighearne I love rational, calm discussion. Given the force the vandal applies, along with the reckless driving required, isn't the punishment physically proportionate. In other words, a certain risk is accepted by the vandal and a set of negative outcomes can be assumed.

Proportionality is a moral measure, not a physical (as in pertaining to literal physics) measure. That hitting a mailbox with X amount of force results in an equal-but-opposite reaction is not the kind of proportionality either just war theory or I were discussing. The two things to compare are the harm of my damaged mailbox and the harm of shattered arm bones and permanent disability. While I will — and did, in the thread — absolutely defend visible fortification of the mailbox (e.g., a solid brick or even visibly concrete mailbox), the stealthy nature of hiding concrete reinforcement within the mailbox so as to catch the vandal by surprise indicates a particular malice. The intention here is not to prevent the smashing of the mailbox, but to visit retribution on one who would do such a thing as to smash my mailbox, that retribution being so far out of proportion to the crime. Put it another way: suppose that, in place of the concrete, I placed a mechanism that shot the vandal dead. Would that be acceptable? Or suppose, as a friend suggested, that we changed the law so that vandals who smash in mailboxes get their arm bones shattered by law. Would we find that to be a just punishment? If you would be appalled at the state's doing this, then you should be even more appalled at the vigilante doing it — the state does it with authority and with the forewarning of statutes while the vigilante does it with no authority and no forewarning. If, on the other hand, you would not be appalled by the state's doing this, then I'm not sure there can be any common ground between us for this discussion to bear fruit, but I wish you luck with the state you would be supporting.
