I remember sitting there staring at my phone while my family laughed in the next room, suddenly feeling anxious instead of happy. My aunt noticed immediately. She sat beside me and said, “Baby, you’re allowed to have a life outside your husband.” I laughed awkwardly because I thought she was exaggerating. She wasn’t. Looking back, the saddest part is how quickly I started shrinking normal parts of myself just to avoid conflict. Meanwhile the people who loved me could see it happening in real time.

@doomscroldarlin @TheEcho13 Most of the collapse of parenting has come from both parents having to work instead of having time to parent. When women were SAHM, they were essentially paid. They had housing, food, clothing and entertainment covered. The family finances were also maintained by women.

Wanting kids and wanting to be a father are not the same thing. It’s easy for men to say they want children when their lives change so little after kids arrive, compared to the massive shift women experience. If men gave women trust that they wanted fatherhood, not just children who slot into his life with minimal disruption, women would be reporting the same level of desire for kids as men.

Every woman I have ever known has been a bit embarrassed about who she dated when she was 19, like it was pretty much the lowest of her dating standards, so it’s really funny to see grown men being proud of dating 19 year olds.
