An exciting trend in political violence research is the methods diversity at the cutting edge of the field. My sense is there’s more qualitative work in top presses & journals than other subfields. A 🧵 to celebrate the benefits of this and raise ideas for deeper engagement.

APSA deadline is next week! We (SEAPRG) are offering light abstract feedback (esp. for junior scholars) and matchmaking for organized panels on Southeast Asia. Fill out this short form by *tomorrow* (Jan 7) and we’ll help get it on a strong APSA panel. tinyurl.com/apsa-sea

@xuyiqing On focusing on projects, my dad wrote this advice for recently tenured economists that I really like: web.stanford.edu/~rehall/Managi… He talks about keeping slack in your schedule for when really good new ideas come along, which has definitely proven out for me.

1/10 🧵 The U.S. just captured a sitting head of state in a military operation. Trump says the U.S. will "run" Venezuela “for now.” Whatever you think of Maduro, this is the most consequential unilateral move in the hemisphere since Panama (1989).

@JohnHolbein1 A generous interpretation is that a lot of crim relies on data acquired from police agencies w/ access restrictions agreements. But that's still nowhere near 100% of studies. The field has been far too slow to adapt its norms around transparency where sharing is feasible, imo.

Virtually no criminology articles have open data/materials. Criminology: what are you doing?

I have an article out today in @IntOrgJournal that tackles a pressing question: As the US retreats from democracy promotion, will autocracies abandon liberal norms and return to overt repression? Our (@DonnoDaniela Jon Pevehouse and Christina Schneider) answer: not so fast.🧵1/

This 👇🏻 is a fascinating and important study on policing. We need more innovative, compelling work like this! Congrats 🎉 to the authors, well-deserved!

Really proud of our new article in @apsrjournal! @nicoravanilla @MatthewJNanes What does citizen contact do to police attitudes in conflict settings? For those interested in bureaucrats, embeddedness, conflict, mix-methods (field experiment + inductive): doi.org/10.1017/S00030…

IR Book of the Week! "Untied Hands" by Dan Reiter. Far from making "credible commitments", states are deliberating in not committing themselves to unwanted actions. Read Schelling for the theory, then read this book for the reality. amazon.com/Untied-Hands-S…
