🇾🇪 A Tribute to the Legendary Martin Buchan 🧵 When Martin Buchan walked through the doors at Old Trafford in February 1972, Manchester United were in chaos. Frank O'Farrell had just paid a club record £125,000 for a 22-year-old defender from Aberdeen, the youngest Scottish Cup-winning captain in history. What we got was far more than a centre-half, we got our spine back. 🔴 The Dark Years Relegation in 1974 was unthinkable. Just six years after lifting the European Cup, we found ourselves preparing for a season at Brisbane Road against Leyton Orient. While some players thought they were too good to go down, Buchan saw it differently. "I wasn't happy about relegation," he explained, "but I decided to stay and help the club back into the First Division." Under Tommy Docherty, we stormed the Second Division with breath taking football, drawing the highest average attendance of any club in the country, and yes, even higher than every First Division club. Buchan led from the front, and the Theatre of Dreams roared back to life. ⚪️ That Wembley Afternoon May 21, 1977. Buchan almost didn't play. A knee ligament injury in the final league game at West Ham had him in serious doubt. "I even told the manager the morning after the game I might as well go back to Manchester," he recalled. But Docherty insisted he get on the bus. Physio Laurie Brown worked miracles. Strapped up and full of anti-inflammatory tablets, Buchan led United out at Wembley. First challenge was a 50-50 with Tommy Smith. "After that, I thought I would be okay," he said with typical understatement. "If you can survive one of Tommy's tackles, you'll be okay." He didn't just survive. He pocketed Kevin Keegan, the two time Ballon d'Or winner playing for the best team in Europe. United won 2-1, denying Liverpool the treble. More significantly, Buchan became the first and only player to captain both Scottish and English FA Cup winning sides. A record that still stands. John Motson captured it perfectly in his commentary: "How appropriate, that a man called Buchan climbs the 39 steps to collect the trophy." 1/3 #MUFC #ManchesterUnited #MartinBuchan

It’s difficult to determine who is the bigger c**t: Simon Jordan or Jim Ratcliffe. It’s a close call.
