@markusoff @acoyne There’s also the “National Popular Vote Interstate Compact”, another (not-unfraught) scheme to end-run around the EC without need for constitutional amendment. Possibly also Sisyphean, but only requires majority adoption, not consensus among the states.

@acoyne but requires every state to agree to this, which sounds about as Sisyphean as abolishing the EC... though even the EC reformers/popular vote advocates mostly propose keeping EC in structure but ending winner-take all

And/or: make states allocate electors in proportion to candidates' share of the vote, rather than winner-take-all. Presto: no more "battleground" states. Or rather, every state becomes a battleground. As it should be.

Instead of eliminating the Electoral College — a very bad and incredibly difficult goal — maybe just expand the House of Representatives to where it would be if Congress hadn’t frozen the number. That would alleviate much of the “un-democratic” nature of the Electoral College.
