The recently approved 🇪🇸 Seventh General Plan for Radioactive Waste (7th PGRR) outlines the cessation of operation for Spanish nuclear power plants between 2027 & 2035, leading to a gradual dismantling of these facilities. Assuming the government is planning to remove these reactors to switch to renewables by 2035, let's take a look at the numbers: Spain has 5 NPP (7 reactors), which collectively generate ~60 TWh annually, averaging around 7.1 GW throughout the year. The combined area occupied by these 5 NPPs is ~6.85 square miles (17.73 km^2). To replace the energy produced by them: With wind energy, an area of about 2466 sq mi (~6382.8 km^2) would be needed to accommodate ~3060 wind turbines. With solar energy, an area of ~513.75 sq mi (1329.75 km^2) would be required for roughly de 22.01 million photovoltaic solar panels. *Subject to Capacity Factors. @sanchezcastejon Mr. President, closing nuclear power plants is a mistake with consequences for us all. Let's reconsider this decision.
