Tech-driven: solve the top problems we can solve using AI. World-driven: rank problems by societal importance and use AI where it helps. Its important to do the latter else we mistake progress in AI for meaningful progress. Analogy: build great cities, not great cities for cars.

I’m incredibly proud of The AI Scientist team for this milestone publication in @Nature. We started this project to explore if foundation models could execute the entire research lifecycle. Seeing this work validated at this level is a special moment. I truly believe AI will forever change the landscape of how scientific discoveries and scientific progress are made.
Sakana AI@SakanaAILabs

The AI Scientist: Towards Fully Automated AI Research, Now Published in Nature Nature: nature.com/articles/s4158… Blog: sakana.ai/ai-scientist-n… When we first introduced The AI Scientist, we shared an ambitious vision of an agent powered by foundation models capable of executing the entire machine learning research lifecycle. From inventing ideas and writing code to executing experiments and drafting the manuscript, the system demonstrated that end-to-end automation of the scientific process is possible. Soon after, we shared a historic update: the improved AI Scientist-v2 produced the first fully AI-generated paper to pass a rigorous human peer-review process. Today, we are happy to announce that “The AI Scientist: Towards Fully Automated AI Research,” our paper describing all of this work, along with fresh new insights, has been published in @Nature! This Nature publication consolidates these milestones and details the underlying foundation model orchestration. It also introduces our Automated Reviewer, which matches human review judgments and actually exceeds standard inter-human agreement. Crucially, by using this reviewer to grade papers generated by different foundation models, we discovered a clear scaling law of science. As the underlying foundation models improve, the quality of the generated scientific papers increases correspondingly. This implies that as compute costs decrease and model capabilities continue to exponentially increase, future versions of The AI Scientist will be substantially more capable. Building upon our previous open-source releases (github.com/SakanaAI/AI-Sc…), this open-access Nature publication comprehensively details our system's architecture, outlines several new scaling results, and discusses the promise and challenges of AI-generated science. This substantial milestone is the result of a close and fruitful collaboration between researchers at Sakana AI, the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the Vector Institute, and the University of Oxford. Congrats to the team! @_chris_lu_ @cong_ml @RobertTLange @_yutaroyamada @shengranhu @j_foerst @hardmaru @jeffclune

Today, we're open sourcing the code behind "The Infinite Crate," our VST/AU plugin that lets you play with Lyria RealTime directly inside your favorite DAW! 🎧🎶 Since we released The Infinite Crate last year, it’s been used by some of our favorite artists - including a wonderful showcase with @daitomanabe in Tokyo - and being featured as a top new music tool at NAMM 2026. We’re now fully open sourcing the plugin for developers to fork, modify, and make their own under the permissive Apache 2.0 license. 💾 Get it here: github.com/magenta/the-in…

From Sundance in Park City, Utah, I'm thrilled to share a project I played a small part in building. It's humbling to see how hard it is to produce animation of this quality. Congratulations to artist Connie He, producer Márcia Mayer and the whole Dear Upstairs Neighbors team!

Our short film Dear Upstairs Neighbors is previewing at @sundancefest. 🎬 It’s a story about noisy neighbors, but behind the scenes, it’s about solving a huge challenge in generative AI: control. Developed by Pixar alumni, an Academy Award winner, researchers, and engineers, here’s how it came together. 🎨

Starting today for Google AI Ultra subscribers, creating with Nano Banana Pro in Flow means mastering the elements and the lens with precision and control. Watch @sanchitsawaria break down how to transform a single static frame into a cinematic shot: ✅ Change focus to guide the viewer's eye ✅ Prompt "make it rain" for photo-accurate physics ✅ Animate using first and last frame while keeping the subject consistent. Control the weather. Direct the camera.

Personal observation: The level of intellectual discussion with @GoogleDeepMind vs @OpenAI that I am able to have is literally night and day. DeepMind knows my work, can raise serious objections, propose and develop alternatives, etc. OpenAI speaks to me with insulting memes and misrepresents my arguments. One place seems intellectually serious, the other doesn’t.

Say goodbye to the silent era of video generation: Introducing Veo 3 — with native audio generation. 🗣️ Quality is up from Veo 2, and now you can add dialogue between characters, sound effects and background noise. Veo 3 is available now in the @GeminiApp for Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. #GoogleIO

Veo now has sound -- the silent era of AI video has ended! It's been so inspiring to see what AI filmmakers (and Veo/Flow team members!) have been creating with Veo. Keep an eye out for posts throughout the day. Try Veo yourself in Flow. deepmind.google/models/veo/

Imagen 3 is still your go-to model for state of the art image quality, but we’re very excited for Gemini’s expanded ability to work with you as a creative collaborator and bring your visual concepts to life!

It’s especially helpful when you want to iterate on an idea, or even see it brought to life with interleaved images, like with this cookie recipe.

It’s amazing to see how far image generation has come. Now Gemini can natively generate contextually relevant images based on its world understanding, including long strings of text.

@NandoDF @recraftai @bfl_ml I'm not a fan of garden leave / non-competes. I'm confused, though, by your claim that "deepminders left Google under the protection of musk." What exactly was the protection that musk provided?

Two European startups @recraftai and @bfl_ml lead image generation in the world. The third place model, Imagen 3, was developed in London but under a Californian company. artificialanalysis.ai/text-to-image/… Europe could lead in other AI products by supporting more entrepreneurship and competition. One issue is that American companies enforce 6 month to 1 year notice periods and non-competes in Europe, but don’t do it in California. A good example of this is @GoogleDeepMind. They force employees to sign these contracts or retaliate by preventing them from getting merit promotions. This is wrong - it’s time for the UK government ( @matthewclifford ) not to be seduced by Google and develop its own AI industry. @xai Grok 3 came to be because a few deepminders left Google under the protection of musk. People leaving DeepMind also led to the creation of @MistralAI - if it was easier to leave, imagine how much more competitive Europe could be. Eliminate notice periods and non-competes in Europe. It has become a question of national security.
