📢 new blog post ✍️ By popular demand, here's a short note summarising the dodgy economic statistics parroted by those wanting the UK to rejoin the EU - and what is wrong with them 🤓 julianhjessop.substack.com/p/explainer-de…

@PeterStefanovi2 @Midgecat Why then, did they campaign on a manifesto explicitly saying they wouldn’t join the Single Market or Customs Union. Were they lying then, or lying now?

Almost two-thirds of Labour members would like to see the party commit to rejoining the European Union at the next general election, exclusive polling for LabourList has revealed labourlist.org/2026/05/labour…

You work for a PM who talks only about “process.” You work for a PM who has reneged on policy pledges in your manifesto. You work for a PM who, in his re-set with the EU, is doing the exact opposite of what he told the electorate he would do. I remember when politicians did what they promised.

It’s striking that all the news on the elections this week is about process, predictions and polls. I remember when journalists reported on policies.

Villa’s embarrassingly poor display against Spurs will rightly anger Hammers and Forest fans. But in a similar scenario ahead of a Euro semi, all clubs would probably do the same.

@vbspurs Americans do have a rather strange understanding of the Magna Carta though. They don't seem to understand that it was a bill that gave rights to Lords and Barons. There was nothing in it about the common man.

I feel Americans know way more about British history than any other foreign history.
Keri@VeryKeriFL

@EnochStevens0n @OfPlus @vbspurs Same here. I'm so into British royal history that I'm genuinely taken aback sometimes by just how little most Americans care or even know about it. It makes sense, obviously, given the unique nature of America's relationship to England, but I'm still surprised by it at times.

Even further back to the Witan. Many people here have a clearer understanding of the thread of liberty from 1215 to the Revolution and Civil War and beyond than British people seem to understand. Both the Kings address to Congress, and the President welcome speech explained this eloquently.

@vbspurs It’s impossible even to cover early American colonial history without touching events back in England, which inevitably raises the question “well, what happened before that?” and you eventually go back to at least the Battle of Hastings.

@BakNTheNYGroove @VickyRichterUSA I’d be interested to see an NFL player run for 80 minutes without time outs, commercial breaks or padding, switch on a dime from offense to defense and give and take hits (without said padding). Then again, I could just watch a real contact sport and call it rugby.

If one is genuinely at a loss, allow me to assist—briefly, and with mercy. The Beatles. Oasis. J. K. Rowling. J. R. R. Tolkien. James Bond. William Shakespeare. Then football—the global game. Played with feet, understood everywhere, and not that stop-start, padded spectacle optimistically branded as “football,” which is, at best, rugby with training wheels and commercial breaks. Architecture older than the concept of a parking lot. Pubs that existed before your constitution was drafted. Tea, strawberries, and fish & chips—simple, enduring, and unmistakably British. And, crucially: accents so appealing they conquered half the world before America had even filed its paperwork for existence. Add to that a history measured in centuries, and a national talent for sarcasm so sharp it tends to go straight over the heads of those who most deserve it. But yes—other than all that, absolutely nothing comes to mind.

At Arlington National Cemetery, The King and Queen pay tribute to the Fallen at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.   Covering more than 600 acres, Arlington is interred with more than 400,000 veterans and their family members, alongside two former US Presidents. The cemetery also contains British Commonwealth graves.   Whilst at the cemetery, Their Majesties also met service personnel from the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand by the Canadian Cross.

An iconic image concludes an historic visit by Their Majesties to New York City. On the third day of their State Visit to honour the American people in their 250th year, King Charles III and Queen Camilla paid tribute at the @911Memorial, toured an urban farm run by @HarlemGrown, explored our shared history and literary heritage at the The New York Public Library (@nypl), attended a business and trade event focusing on the depth and breadth of US-UK economic ties at Rockefeller Center, and celebrated the power of US-UK cultural partnerships with The King's Trust USA. Today, Their Majesties continue their State Visit in Virginia. #GreaterTogether #America250 #StateVisit2026 @UKinNewYork

The official visit of His Majesty King Charles III has started on a high. Both his address to Congress, and the President's welcoming speech were masterful reminders of the progress of liberty. From Magna Carter, through the Glorious Revolution to the American Revolution. This shared heritage binds both countries more than anything else.
