The real problem in criminal justice is our blind addiction to the use of prison to solve every societal problem. The evidence is crystal clear that sending people to prison (especially children and young people) hugely increases crime over the long term. Unless and until we grasp this basic fallacy of our longterm criminal justice policy, we will continue to lurch from crisis to crisis, all the while failing to rehabilitate those in prison and creating more and more victims of serious crime.
