After seeing other's input, I suppose this was not exactly Deus ex Machina. However, I still do not feel like the scene itself had a compelling build up to his manifestation of the mark. I will reiterate that he went from being hopeless to just "locking in" within a few lines, -

Canto 9 spoilers: I feel that Sinclair's usage of the mark was the most egregious case of Deus ex Machina in the canto. I certainly thought it was cool and fun, but the mark does not seem to me like something that one would just partially manifest for a moment -
