Every person in our nation deserves to live free from gun violence. Last year, we passed the most significant federal gun safety legislation in almost 30 years. But more must be done. Today, on National Gun Violence Awareness Day, I am calling on leaders in statehouses and in the United States Congress to pass commonsense reforms. Make background checks universal, pass red flag laws, repeal the liability shield that protects gun manufacturers, ban high-capacity magazines, and renew the assault weapons ban. We know the solutions. We just need leaders to step up, show some courage, and act to save lives.
