Thanks @anna_bortnick for highlighting these factors affecting the choice of interventional cardiology as a career path. This is an issue we should all be passionate about. At this time, Interventional cardiologists are often the “Seal Team Six” of the hospital and the efforts are often under appreciated especially regarding remuneration and occupational health among other factors highlighted. @SCAI has been working behind the scenes to address these factors but I strongly believe that a concerted and “loud” effort should be made to fix the relative occupational disadvantage of being an IC in order to stem this trend of trainee loss. And yes, the training requirements may need to be adjusted/optimized, a push for call pay will need to be mandated in contracts. In addition, new cath lab standards mandating (mostly) lead free cath labs may need to be instituted as a matter of urgency. As an early career interventional cardiologist doing high volume/high risk procedures, I can confirm that the physical, psychological and social burden is real. Everything we can do to improve these will greatly help in the overall health of this specialty that we hold dear. @SrihariNaiduMD @HashimHayder @giorgiomedranda

#MATCH Interesting data in Cardiology: General Cardiology: 292 programs filled (100%), 1,377 positions filled (100%) Interventional Cardiology: 104 programs filled (68%), 236 position filled (76.9%) I am surprised by the amount of programs unfilled in IC.
