The problem was Spirit was not a budget airline, they were just cheap. Constant delays, long layovers, and their bag and hidden fees often made a ticket with them more expensive than American or Delta once added all up. They had a bad reputation and they did little to fix it.

Budget airlines are essential. Spirit Airlines shutdown will have a tremendous impact on people throughout the country. Everyone cannot afford Delta, American, or United.

University leadership and consultants know that in the public's mind "low-enrollment" = "worthless." It's a much easier sell to say "we are cutting low-enrollment programs" than it is to say "we're killing good programs because we burnt money on other dumb non-educational stuff."

I touched on this when I wrote about the recent skulduggery at UChicago: often the programs put on the chopping block aren't losing much (or any) money. They're sacrificial lambs that get the axe in order to compensate for financial mismanagement in other areas of the university.
