As an English teacher, I thought my job was to teach kids about books, and plot, and theme, and symbols. Then I spent my career teaching them about themselves, about courage, and hard work, and resiliency, and hope. Never saw that coming. So glad it did. #NCTE #edchat #engchat

Creative and confident kids do not emerge from statistical methods like grade point averages and percentile ranks. These measures are not sufficient to describe student knowledge and abilities. The same is true for measuring the worth and expertise of teachers. Say it with me!

People reveal their priorities quietly. Not in what they say—but in what they delay, avoid, or never make time for. Pay attention to patterns, not promises.

Every once in a while, we should have a PD session where all school staff talk about teaching simply. No jargon. No acronyms. No data slides. Just an honest, human conversation about what really happens in classrooms—free from all the pedagogical clutter.

Under the current paradigm, special education teachers spend upwards of 80% of their time on compliance paperwork and meetings and very little timeactually teaching. Surely, there is a better way

This is so much to say about our shifting trends in literacy instruction. What I know for sure is that we're jumping off one broken bandwagon and jumping on others. This is what happens when we don't do our homework. We've made this mistake before☹️ #reading #EducationLeadership

When principals create clarity, protect collaboration time, and offer feedback grounded in care and high expectations, teachers feel empowered to stretch, reflect, and grow. Strong leadership doesn’t just guide instruction—it lifts it. #LearnLeverageLead

Mini-whiteboards turn a classroom into a retrieval practice engine. Every student answers. The teacher sees understanding instantly. Instruction adjusts immediately. Simple tool. Big instructional leverage.

Many of the greatest teachers will never win prestigious awards, amass wealth, or become famous. They simply show up every day, ignite minds, and change lives—one lesson at a time. Their impact is quiet, but profound.

@Emma_Turner75 @GregJWolcott Yes, absolutely! It's sad really. A poor relation that is made to sleep on the sofa whilst other strategies are tucked snuggly into a warm bed. I pray for modeling.

"If you're not modelling, you're not teaching." Making expert thinking visible is an essential part of teaching. Modelling does this but ever more frequently I see modelling being pedagogy's poor relation.

Sorry to say, but the stuff we put in front of kids and the questions we ask them are too easy, too often. We do not help students by making things easy for them. The way we show them love and respect is by expecting them to be brilliant...because they are! #edchat #education

Wife is away. Daughter: “Dad, Instead of watching a movie together what if I read Northanger Abbey aloud?” Not sure what I’ve done to deserve this but I’m going to try to do everything exactly the same tomorrow just in case.
