The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice. Except it doesn’t bend on its own—it bends because we pull it in the direction of justice. What keeps me hopeful during times like these is being surrounded by people who are doing just that.

Old-school constructive feedback: Willam Osler reprimands Harvey Cushing (then a new attending) for his arrogant attitude toward other staff. They would later become lifelong friends. Note the masterful last sentence of the letter. (source: bit.ly/4d0pgQ3)

Why are doctors always late? Why are they always tired? Why must they see >20 patients daily to keep the lights on? It’s important to empathize with each other. Thanks for this powerful analogy, @jjfitzgeraldMD.

Obama: “What Hamas did was horrific, and there is no justification for it. And what is also true is that the occupation, and what’s happening to Palestinians, is unbearable… “You have to admit that all of us are complicit to some degree.”

As a chief resident , I feel that some trainees coming into surgery are sensitive to feedback ignoring the context of why it may seem harsh: the stress of patient care , operating and making safe clinical decisions…how much is generational or program specific, I do not know
Ryan William Day, MD@ryanwday

4. Thick skin/resiliency or whatever you want to call it is important. A lot of “feedback” you receive will be harsh and in stressful moments of patient care. Most of this “feedback” probably isn’t useful and is more a reflection of the stress felt by the person giving it.

As my long run at being a trainee comes to a close, I thought I would put together my thoughts on training. I specifically want to talk about surgical training although some things will be more broadly applicable. I'll do another thread for HPB training specifically. A🧵

The pendulum has swung too far. Penalizing falls in the hospital has resulted in patients who aren’t allowed to get out of bed. They get weaker, depressed, constipated, pressure ulcers and ultimately need SNF placement. Ambulation should be viewed as a key to healing.

Zuckerberg owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Jeff Bezos owns the Washington Post. Elon Musk owns Twitter. When multi-billionaires take control of our most vital platforms for communication, it’s not a win for free speech. It’s a win for oligarchy.

I find it infuriating that I have to pay for parking AT A PLACE I'M REQUIRED TO BE FOR MY JOB. Why are large hospitals, with millions in profits, charging healthcare workers for the right to park their car? #soapbox #MedTwitter
