Calling Butcher’s death “unnecessary” completely ignores what The Boys has always been about. The entire show is literally the story of a man consumed by revenge until there’s nothing left of him. A happy ending for Butcher would’ve betrayed his character more than his death did. Homelander dying pathetically was also the point. The show spent years building him up as a god only to reveal he was always just a broken, insecure bully hiding behind power. Giving him some glorious warrior death would’ve romanticised him. Frenchie’s funeral being chaotic and awkward felt realistic for this universe too. These characters cope with trauma through humour and dysfunction that’s been consistent since Season 1. And honestly, not every finale needs a triumphant “everyone gets closure” Marvel ending. The bittersweet endings: - Kimiko losing people - MM raising Ryan - Hughie finally getting peace all fit the cynical tone of the show. You can say the season pacing was weak or some fights were underwhelming, fair enough. But a lot of the things people hate about the finale are actually deliberate thematic choices, not bad writing.
