Thanks for recognizing @PaperCityMag's coverage, Terry. But the only thanks should go to PaperCity. I'm lucky enough to work for a place that trusts my judgement on what's important for us to cover and lets me be creative with stretching the travel budget (driving places much more than other outlets for example). PaperCity's covered 30 of University of Houston basketball's 31 games in person this season. The only one I wasn't at was the January 3 game at Cincinnati and that was a budget decision (with holiday season flight prices), not because I had something better to do. This is nothing new though. This goes back years to the AAC days. PaperCity was the only Houston outlet at the wild Alabama road game finish (with the missed goal-tending call) back in 2021. But there's certainly no need for comparisons. PaperCity doesn't make its decisions based on what anyone else is doing. I've been blessed. I was very fortunate to have Jack Ebling (@drivewithjack) — the legendary longtime Michigan State beat writer — as an early mentor. When I was freelancing on MSU football and basketball at the Lansing State Journal as a 19 and 20-year-old kid still in college, Jack would drive to Big Ten road games rather than fly so that I could go and help cover the games. He did this for scores of young journalists over the years, both before and after me too. The paper would have flown him no questions asked, but he gave up much easier travel for himself and time with his family so that more members of the Journal team could make the trips and the paper would have better coverage. That's an incredibly powerful example to see early on. And the older I get, the more I marvel at Jack's selfless decisions. If I didn't still hustle now, I'd feel like I was letting guys like Jack down. It's really about who you're fortunate to have influence you.
