@ExeterHipUnit After (at least) 15 years of study, hip surgeons learn new aporoaches (some of them non-anatomic), new prosthesis (some of them wacky), even robots, and they are less able to learn a fundamental surgical technique that could be resumed in just one word: pressurization???. Weird.

This study is from New Zealand. The results don’t necessarily apply to the UK where, generally, the standard of cement technique is high. However, if you can’t cement a socket well then, correct, you’re probably better off using a hybrid. Hip surgeons should be able to use cement

This study supports the use of uncemented acetabular fixation over cemented when used in combination with the Exeter component at all ages. There is improved survivorship for all-cause revision in patients less than 70 years of age ow.ly/q2SR50zD4C5? #acetabularfixation

Important offline discussion with @andrewhallortho. The #FFP3 masks we use don’t have a filter on exhaled air and it’s at front so may increase risk #SSI, at least in orthopaedic implant surgery. Is it worth using a normal mask over front but this will add to usage. We do.

@ExeterHipUnit @VuMediOrtho If surgeons change approaches, learn to use new devices, and do much harder things, how cementing a polished stem could be so difficult? Exeter stems were the only cemented implants that has worked properly even in catastrophic cement combinations like polybutilmethacrylate.

It’s not hard. If you can do a hip replacement, you cement a tapered polished stem. There are a few tips and we’re using a period of isolation to do the @VuMediOrtho videos we’ve been meaning to do for too long!

Surgeons determine the stability of a new short femoral stem compared with a conventional one in patients undergoing cementless total hip #arthroplasty & find the #MiniHip achieved less subsidence & equivalent overall migration compared with the #MetaFix ow.ly/SQPJ50wRuiw
