The World Cup has kicked off an interesting experiment: hundreds of thousands of European soccer fans, some of whom arrived expecting a dystopian country. If you consume mainstream European media coverage of the United States under Trump, you would be forgiven for packing body armor. Instead, the accounts filtering back across the Atlantic have a consistent tone: the people here are generous, friendly, welcoming. And the visitors notice something else, even the ones who have never heard of a purchasing power parity adjustment for GDP per capita comparisons across borders. They notice the wealth. The cars, the houses, the restaurants, the sheer scale of consumption. They notice the contrast between what is happening here and what is happening back home. You don’t need the IMF’s World Economic Outlook to see it, though the WEO will confirm it: even after adjusting for purchasing power, U.S. GDP per capita is now roughly 38% higher than the EU average. This post is not about Balogun's suspension! :) thetwocents.substack.com/p/europe-chose…

@ClayTravis Americans largely don't care about the sport. The best athletes choose the sports we do care about.

If other countries are pissed about Balogun's red card being lifted, they can stayed pissed. Wanting to punish a 25-year-old who did nothing wrong and has carried himself well just because you're angry at Trump and FIFA is weak sauce.

MLS is already incredibly watchable and is quickly becoming the most popular league for American viewers. Young audiences and audiences new to soccer prefer something local to their communities, not being hipsters trying to seem European.

"The World Cup is a higher standard than the Prem" 👀 Is the World Cup the pinnacle of world football? @Chelsearory | @Mrjamieohara1 | @MarkWright_

Unbelievably frustrating to see so many Americans on here saying “the World Cup has me hooked, I can’t wait to start watching the Premier League” when there is surely a football club with a nice stadium & decent fans within an hour of their front door (with exceptions of course)

Hey my lovely European friends. Here’s my thermostat setting for bedtime. Every night in the summer. Why? Freedom, baby. 🇺🇸 F R E E D O M 🇺🇸
