1,500 MINING JOBS AT RISK Glencore has warned it may walk away from a critical government-backed electricity discount deal, placing 1,500 jobs at risk ahead of a 31 March deadline. Despite Eskom offering to slash tariffs to 62 cents per kilowatt hour to save the struggling ferrochrome sector, Glencore CEO Japie Fullard (pictured) described certain deal conditions as "unacceptable." South Africa, which holds 80% of global chrome reserves, has seen its smelting capacity plummet due to soaring power costs. Eskom CEO Dan Marokane (pictured) is pushing to finalise the deal to recover R18bn in annual revenue, but the standoff now threatens the long-term viability of the nation’s industrial base.
