Liaison psychiatrist & medical leader/manager @CNTWNHS. Champion for holistic, integrated care - no health without mental health! Opinions mine.

Our second Chief Executive’s Award goes to... Hope Haven. Hope Haven is a community transformation project in West Cumbria. This is the first time clinical services have joined forces with multiple external organisations to provide a solution to community mental health.

@PME_Politics It’s one thing to support assisted dying ‘in principle’ but quite another thing to support this specific Bill in its current form….

*That said* Brits are very split on whether the Assisted Dying Bill itself is the right or wrong thing for the government to be focusing on right now, indicating that while the general idea is popular, the passage of this specific bill may not be what the public are looking for,

A reminder as we go into the third reading of the bill today that the principle of assisted dying remains popular among the British public. @YouGov polling in mid-April found that 78% supported "In principle... assisted dying being legal in some form in the UK".

@NCL_Uncovered I moved to Newcastle in 1992 & that’s what it looked like! Anyone remember the concrete ‘Lego’ figures around Haymarket before they did it up? There’s one or two in a garden as ornaments in Kenton…. Tho apparently that was 1999 theguardian.com/uk/the-norther…

@kimleadbeater In my experience (Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist) is that yes, most doctors can tell you how to assess capacity, but they struggle to put it into practice. And ask 6 or 7 doctors in a complex case -you’ll get a range of views. Eg. bailii.org/ew/cases/EWCOP…

The Mental Capacity Act is the right place to start in terms of determining if a patient can make this decision. It's been tried and tested. It's used every day. Doctors are confident using it and it strikes the right balance - protecting both them and their patients. 4/7

The message needs to go out across frontline NHS staff that suicidal patients who have mental capacity are *not* outside the scope of MH care or, if needed, the MH Act. This applies to patients presenting with self-harm, personality disorder, anorexia nervosa & many more.
