@DE_Gifford because its being run by people who resent the fact its a convenience store company and want to simply just be given money for having an MBA so they do a real estate shuffle to that effect

Flyers have had 5 different HCs in the last 4 years and 4 months and they were able to find a way to not be out of the playoffs for a decade. Odd, no?

@Espo408 @JeffVeillette The point is Jeff was saying "finish top half" which theyre likely to do And theyre also perfectly in line with other teams in the playoffs because the metro is shit so again its not as simple as "finish top half"

@drstexy @JeffVeillette I’d get it if any of those other teams were in conference, but they’ve got multiple teams in front of them for the eastern wildcard

"NHL should have play-ins because it would prevent teams like Detroit from going ten years without a meaningful game" is not only an argument I disagree with, but basically makes my counter for me. If you can't finish in the top half once in a decade, you don't deserve a bail-out
craig mz@CraigMaz1

@JeffVeillette Honestly a play in would be a gold mine for the league, teams like DET don’t go 10 years without a game of importance, and probably add some additional spice to the postseason. But can’t happen until 1-8. Also if you do play in then lotto is straight odds 1-12.

Pistons and Lions were respected way more when they were bottom feeder losers, its clear there is a real hatred for Detroit in the sports media/world

@graceryderr A movie can only be so bad when you have the base characters, those actors, and the aesthetics they had But that movie is pretty bad. It doesnt flow, it doesnt move gracefully, it doesnt really say anything, nothing really happens outside of a few scenes. It just doesnt work

@WakeThe_FukUp @ForTullos things have their time and place Example the blues brothers is a great film, but theres no cultural contextual equivalence of sidelined and underappreciated all time classic black artists forgotten by wide society to structure a film around now. It only works post disco 80s

@drstexy @ForTullos Explain why it couldnt be about anything other than a specific person/situation that doesn't overarch beyond the events portrayed? And why Goodfellas could but a modern movie couldn't?

@WakeThe_FukUp @ForTullos Thats what this whole thread is about from OP That mafia movies do not have a broader conceptual thesis statement in current society, anything they might say is old hat at best and completely irrelevant at worst. They have the same cultural relevancy as westerns do now

@drstexy @ForTullos Why couldn't a modern mob movie say something about society? You make no sense. You have no idea the real story about most of the Philly mob/Joey Merlino, if a writer went deep enough they could easily flesh out a much deeper story than just a face value mob movie

@usher933 @JeffVeillette Im not saying they should have a play in Im just saying "finish in the top half" isnt a universal and simple truth, especially right now when it just isnt true

@drstexy @JeffVeillette It’s going to happen from time to time but the conference system is fine in general. If you can’t make the playoffs with a 50 percent chance, you don’t need a silly play in tournament. The regular season is already too long and boring.

@WakeThe_FukUp @ForTullos yeah and im saying a modern mafia movie doesnt have the contextual juice to be about anything besides specific people and situations, that don't overarch beyond the events portrayed goodfellas and casino say shit about society, a current movie is judt gonna say "that was mob"

@drstexy @ForTullos Yes but they were about one main character there's no reason any modern movie about one main character can't follow the same model. Any good movie based on a single person still tells a much broader story with amazing supporting characters.

@WakeThe_FukUp @ForTullos they were just vehicles for larger stories the Irishman is clearly about aging and doing something awful and ignoring your family and claiming it was good for them, and just general stubbornness and goodfellas is about how empty and pointless mob life was

Not necessarily. The Irishman was largely about Frank Sheeran and that was a good movie. Goodfellas is largely about Henry Hill, great movie. Donnie Brasco-Joe Pistone. It's just how it's done. You tell the story of the main character but don't center the entire movie around just them

@JoeyAmerica22 @ForTullos the op is saying that mafia movies are overdone and old hat like westerns were by th 1970s when mafia movies took over westerns sort of only came back simply because there were none and there was a gap (enhanced by nostalgia as well) Thats kinda all mafia movies can hope for

@ForTullos Westerns weren't popular because people were still riding around on horses and forming posses. Why would the mafia have to still be prevalent to do movies about it? It's cyclical. Chances are they will make a comeback.

@WakeThe_FukUp @ForTullos ya any mafia piece now is gonna be about specific stories or people, not about the overarching concept of organized crime (which tbh dooms them to being less interesting and broadly inferior)

@ForTullos There's nothing left to tell. Maybe a Joey Merlino movie could generate some buzz, but other than that every major mob guy has had their story told. The 80s and 90s Philly mob was insanity and Joey was/is a hell of a personality so that could be something people enjoy

@whitesundesert the passages they cross probably also breed complacency, they dont usually cross very large or turbulent bodies of water so when shit does get a-mixing it gets real bad real quick

I did a study back in engineering school which looked into why ferries were the deadliest form of transport. It’s because they generally don’t make money and the simple back and forth repeated journeys breed a culture of complacency.
