Today marks a pivotal moment for health in East Africa. The East African Forum on Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Health (TCIH) is officially underway in Nairobi, Kenya — bringing together government officials, WHO representatives, regulators, researchers, and practitioners from across the region. With 60–80% of East Africans relying on traditional medicine as their primary form of healthcare, formalising and integrating TCIH into national health systems is no longer optional — it is essential for achieving Universal Health Coverage. A landmark milestone of this forum is the launch of the East African TCIH Network, a structured regional body with Kenya as inaugural chair, Tanzania as vice-chair, and a clear roadmap toward independence by 2030. The network will work to standardise training and certification, strengthen research, protect indigenous knowledge, and bridge the gap between traditional and conventional medicine.
