Recent attacks in the United Arab Emirates and other Arab countries are a stark reminder of how the escalating Middle East conflict is undermining the foundations of health and safety.
In the #UAE, missile strikes have reportedly killed eight people and injured 158. In #Oman, at least two people have died as a result of a missile strike, while in #Kuwait two paramedics were injured by shrapnel that struck their ambulance centre.
Energy facilities have come under attack across the region, including in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. There are also growing concerns in the Emirates and across the region that strikes on such sites could cause respiratory issues linked to breathing toxic smoke from fires. Damage to desalination plants also threatens water supplies, while people’s mental health is placed under increased strain as communities cope with the stress of living under the risk of bombardment.
@WHO strongly condemns these acts and expresses deep concern over the humanitarian toll they continue to impose.
In a productive meeting with Ambassador Jamal Al Musharakh, UAE Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, we discussed the wide-ranging health impacts of the escalating conflict in his country and across the region.
I commended the UAE for the resilience that it, and its Arab neighbours, have demonstrated in the face of repeated missile barrages.
Ambassador Al Musharakh and I also emphasized the lifesaving role of the Dubai-based WHO Hub for Global Health Emergencies Logistics in delivering medical supplies across the Middle East, Africa and Asia. WHO is grateful for the UAE’s continued support in maintaining this essential humanitarian gateway.
In addition, we agreed on the urgent need to strengthen multilateral action to safeguard the health and well-being of all people affected by conflict, including addressing both physical and mental health challenges, as well as the risks posed by pandemics and other crises.
Peace is the best medicine.

Pleased to welcome Ambassador David Lametti, @CanadaUN Permanent Representative, to @WHO headquarters in Geneva.
We agreed on the importance of maintaining trust in science and evidence-based guidance to protect health, especially in safeguarding children from vaccine-preventable diseases.
I thanked the Ambassador for #Canada’s key role in the ongoing negotiations on the Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing (PABS) system, a core component of the historic @WHO Pandemic Agreement to be considered by the World Health Assembly in May.
I also recognized Canada’s support for the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies and the Pandemic Fund, which are helping make countries and communities safer in the face of humanitarian and pandemic threats.
We discussed the importance of @WHO’s wide-ranging reforms, including strengthening sustainable financing and advancing the work of WHO hubs for pandemic intelligence and pathogen sharing in Germany and Switzerland.

As the first day of spring dawns, I extend my warmest wishes to all who celebrate the occasion of Nowruz.
Nowruz means "new day" in Persian.
For many across the Middle East, they will be observing this occasion amidst a devastating war.
My thoughts are with every family separated by conflict and displacement. Those who cannot sit together, share a meal, or even hear each other's voice.
Yet the enduring spirit of Nowruz - of renewal, harmony and hope - can guide us towards a more peaceful place. I urge all parties to seize this opportunity to de-escalate tensions, silence the guns, and forge a just and lasting peace.
As always, the best medicine is peace.

#Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases killing 3500 a day, and is a major driver of poverty, inequality and antimicrobial resistance.
At the @UN General Assembly in 2023, world leaders adopted bold new targets to end TB.
However, funding cuts make it more difficult to reach those targets.
As we approach World TB Day, I call on governments to invest in TB care, accelerate innovation and ensure that TB services are accessible, affordable, stigma‑free and community‑driven.

Child mortality has fallen dramatically, from more than 10 million deaths in 2000 to 4.9 million in 2024, according to new estimates released today by @WHO, @UNICEF, @UN Population Division and @WorldBankGroup.
However, despite the progress made, around 6,300 newborns still die every single day.
The leading causes are complications from prematurity, labour and delivery, along with preventable diseases such as malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea. Conflict, humanitarian crises and funding gaps are further undermining essential health services in many countries.
Yet the solutions are well known.
WHO urges governments, donors and partners to strengthen primary health care, expand immunization, improve maternal and newborn care, and ensure every child has access to good nutrition and lifesaving treatment. With renewed commitment, we can accelerate progress once again.

I was honored to welcome H.E. Mr. Kim Min-seok, Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, to @WHO headquarters in Geneva.
We held a constructive discussion on strengthening Korea–WHO collaboration to advance health equity and expand access to biomanufacturing training and technology.
We also explored the significant potential of artificial intelligence to enhance health decision-making and action.
In this context, we agreed to join other @UN partners to support the Republic of Korea’s AI Hub initiative, promoting the ethical and effective use of AI globally, including through close alignment with the WHO Global Training Hub for Biomanufacturing hosted by the Korean government.
I look forward to working together to advance our shared mission of #HealthForAll.

Global Health Partnerships (@THETlinks) have shown that ethical, mutually beneficial collaboration enabling health workers to learn and act globally improves local care. Partnership is not optional in global health. It is essential.
A key challenge we face globally is the shortage of health and care workers. While international mobility of health workers yields benefits for high‑income countries, it requires co-investment and strong protections to prevent deepening inequities and weakening health systems among other countries.
I call on countries to use the @WHO Global Code of Practice on the International Recruitment of Health Personnel to guide the migration of health workers in ways that benefit the health systems of the source country, destination country and health workers themselves.

An upsurge in hostilities between #Afghanistan and #Pakistan has resulted in at least 6 health facilities reportedly being impacted in Afghanistan since late February.
In addition, a reported overnight strike on the Omid Drug Rehabilitation Facility in Kabul, managed by the Ministry of Interior, killed more than 400 people, and injured at least 250, who were being treated for substance use disorders.
@WHO is working to verify these incidents. But the intensifying conflict is placing additional strain on health systems and increasing risks to the health and well-being of vulnerable populations.
I urge all parties to de-escalate and prioritize peace and health.
Peace is the best medicine.
