📮 Happy 50th birthday to our friends the Letter Box Study Group! Founded in 1976 they’re the recognised authority on the history and development of Britain’s road side post boxes, which date all the way back to 1852. Around 800 different types of post box have been identified with more than 115,500 examples across the country.
To celebrate, here are 10 of our favourite 20th Century post box designs...🧵

@DangleSpanners @Smudger77 @jonburkeUK If by "selfishly convenient" you mean being able to go from A to B with shopping, kids, and a guarantee of staying warm and dry, then yes, that's convenience. Public transport meets those needs too, and it isn't a private car.

@dscy83 @Smudger77 @jonburkeUK 'Nor appealing'
How we get to the root of it
So by 'not an option' you ment not as selfishly convenient as a private car

@EricEatsPickles @Smudger77 @jonburkeUK And good for them if they enjoy it. The question is whether that growth is coming from former car users or mostly from people switching from other modes that are already plentiful in London...

On my commute this morning it's hard not to notice the continued proliferation of cargo bikes on London streets. This morning parents with children, 3 businesses ( tree surgeon, plumber, window cleaner) a couple of mandatory @pedalmeapp and Freddies Flowers. Bring it on London 👌

@Smudger77 @jonburkeUK ...for large parts of the UK population commuting by bike is neither practical nor appealing. Public transport is much more inclusive.

@jonburkeUK The main problem we have in the UK is lack of infrastructure and connectivity. I'm all for fewer cars, but what are people supposed to do without access to good transit? We need to improve opportunities for work and education, not punish people whose options are limited.
English

@dscy83 I’m afraid you’ve got it the wrong way round.
Only demand-side measures deliver reductions in car ownership and use in cities. Hundreds of academic studies prove this.
The supply-side measures do, however, need to be in place to provide the alternative means of transit.

Very sad. And of course grade inflation works primarily to the benefit of the already privileged, who can use their connections, status etc to distinguish themselves from the mass of “A” students.
Some day someone will write the history of how the extreme prohibition against offending people worked to the advantage of the already privileged.
Steve McGuire@sfmcguire79
Grade inflation is out of control: 60% of grades are now A’s. That’s risen from 26% just 20 years ago.
