The presumption that public outrage over the Delhi Gymkhana Club stems from a desperate desire for entry is a remarkably convenient, yet highly patronizing subversion of the issue. Citizens are not clamoring to access your lounges; they are questioning basic fiscal equity and sovereign rationality. How does an elite cohort rationalize the private, restricted enjoyment of 27.3 acres of prime Lutyens land on an archaic annual lease heavily subsidized by ordinary taxpayers? If legacy is the primary currency used to justify retaining a post-colonial social fiefdom, does a privileged ecosystem possess a hereditary right to exclude the state from its own land when it is required for national infrastructure? The invocation of Clause 4 of the lease deed is not born out of animosity toward high society, but out of absolute public purpose. Sprawling administrative setups in South Block can relocate for governance modernization, yet an elite social club claims immunity from structural re-entry. In a democratic republic, national defense infrastructure must always supersede subsidized, recreational exclusivity.

Most people demanding the closure of the Gymkhana Club seem angry about being denied entry. It is a private club. Having known it well since I was a child it puzzles me that it suddenly became a ‘national security threat’.

Over 25 MLAs would be resigning in Tamil Nadu in the next few days and there are going to be by polls in over 10% of the assembly seats and it may go up to even 20% if, as suspected, even DMK MLAs start resigning… It is going to be a mini election soon… BJP needs to put Annamalai at the helm immediately to make the pitch and have BJP’s presence felt in these mini elections otherwise the party will further be pushed to irrelevance in Tamil Nadu!! But is anyone listening? @NitinNabin @narendramodi

@dsen68 @ShivAroor There is a theory in psychology that - a stupid person always believes himself/herself to be the most intelligent among everybody around him/her. Preeti is use-case of that theory (Dunning-Kruger). What the theory missed out is that, such people are utterly irritating.

The correct term is “Indian Subcontinent,” not “South Asia.” This is a geographical fact that cannot be changed. That’s it.

This is an argument that being overstretched. There is a case to be made for giving houses on subsidised rent to people who are on government purpose or to bodies that serve a government backed social purpose. The DGC does not fall under any of the categories that need govt aid.
Tavleen Singh@tavleen_singh

You clearly do not know that in no other democratic country do taxpayers pay to house ministers and officials. And we pay to house them on land that sells for more than ₹150 crores an acre. It is insanity to continue doing this.

This is like a murderer saying “you can’t convict me because the murder conviction rate in a india is 37%. First convict the remaining 63% then you can find me guilty”.

By all means run a bulldozer over Delhi Gymkhana. But don’t give the bullshit of exclusivity or privilege or tax payer money. If thats the standard we are living by then shut down Constitution Club; demolish the CSOI where govt land was given at throw away price to babus; shut down DSOI; take back all newspaper properties on BSZ Marg; Take back all lands given to NGOs which are profit centres; demolish IIC and Habitat Centre; stop subsidised food in parliament. MPs get paid so why should their food be subsidised? if they cant afford it, step down from parliament and do something that pays you enough. Shut down the Air Force and Army Golf Clubs, Santushti Centre, Race Club, and the Delhi Flying Club where no one flies anything. The DGC is being targeted because someone has an axe to grind and didnt get membership. Now its being made an elite vs non-elite fight which it isn't. But since we all want to play Bolshevik commies or are inspired by CCP and Khmer Rouge to demolish everything nice, decent, genteel, lets do a comprehensive job of it. Make it all a animal shelter which would warm the cockles of Pol Pot's heart. But please don’t give the BS of security because that is total hogwash. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
