@nlamontagne @newfangl3d I think paid on street parking should be expanded in more neighbourhoods with the condition that some of the parking revenue is invested back into the neighbourhoods to improve walkability and the public realm.

@newfangl3d I think you're right with the caveat that cities should set parking rates to manage demand + not to raise revenue. Otherwise, this fiddly incremental approach makes no one happy.

I actually don't know if this is productive, because death by 1000 cuts just gives whiners more time to whine. Let's pull off the band-aid and charge for all parking everywhere all the time instead.
Global Edmonton@GlobalEdmonton

Council voted to raise rates, expand the hours drivers have to pay — making all ePark zones operate from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. — start charging on Sundays and reduce the free parking period from 30 to 15 minutes. #yeg #yegtraffic #yegcc trib.al/9144A2x

@dstn_m @RylundJohnson Basically they can help the economics b/c the efficiency is so much higher than resistance heat. But we need to study the COP in the real world to trust it. :) The lab does not quite equal the NWT!

With the Carbon Tax implementation, home heating fuel in the NWT will go up by 17 cents April 1 and 4 more cents every year after that until 2030.

@RylundJohnson With recent advances in cold weather air source heat pumps, I think there is a big opportunity to make that the primary heating source for many homes with biomass or high efficiency propane as backup in really cold weather. The challenge is scaling supply and installers.

The business case for district heating has likely gotten much better. With fuel not getting any cheaper, Yellowknife should explore large scale district heating for the Downtown core.

@RJSCity Yeah, it always seemed odd that you would voluntarily reduce the value of your property by restricting its development potential.

Prediction - There will be lots of talk about this. Lots of comments like "80% of people have expressed interest". Then when the time comes to sign on the dotted line, it will largely fizzle out as it did in Edmonton with regards to lot splitting.

@uytaelee It was a very nuanced video on a very complex subject! Thanks for creating and sharing it. There are no silver bullets for housing affordability but there are lots of small changes that could help.

This video was tricky. I spent several months researching, writing, and losing my mind a few times before I felt confident enough with the script to produce it. It challenged many of my core assumptions around housing (and its elasticity) and I hope it does the same for you too.

@cailynnk Yes, they are warm. I live in Yellowknife and my toddler wears them all the time outside in the winterq. They seem to be quite durable too.

@bmdoucet Really interesting thread Brian. I studied in Rotterdam in 2017/18 and I also lived in Rotterdam south and saw the quickly changing dynamic of the neighbourhood on a daily basis. It made me think a lot about gentrification and its effects, both good and bad, on residents.

Rotterdam South 'We make the city of tomorrow today' Yes, but the bigger question: 'who' is the city being made for? I've studied gentrification in Rotterdam since 2006 & recently returned to see what had changed since I left in 2017. Here's a short visual thread. 1/14

@DavidWasylciw Yeah, it is certainly more challenging terrain. Perhaps a a mix of boardwalks and hard pack trail would work instead of paving the entire section.

@dstn_m I'm curious to see how they'd do it, I guess a lot of blasting to get things to a reasonable grade? Or maybe some kind of boardwalk-esque buildout?

There’s some discussion about the trails and completing the Frame Lake Trail - which I assume means blasting rock and having a paved path? Since otherwise it’s currently a trail… That said, it would be nice if the City occasionally replaced destroyed & faded signs… #yzf

@_MarkSutcliffe I love running errands by bike with my son. He enjoys sitting in the chariot that I pull behind my bike. Bike paths make this so much easier.

Add to that a quarter of a billion dollars on bike lanes. Ottawa needs transportation priorities that work for them. Whether your getting groceries, taking your kids to school, getting to the community centre for hockey practice. Bike lanes aren't going to help you with that.

@cvd_yk Yep, exactly! This isn't difficult stuff today, it just requires political will to make it a priority.

Details matter and this could have been an easy win to make downtown Yellowknife a more people oriented and vibrant place. I hope the next Council takes street redesign, walkability and accessibility seriously. We need to get this right.

Easily could have added a mid-block crossing and some greenery to soften the streetscape and make it more of a people place.d

@dfwagoner Here in Yellowknife there are people that bike through winter on even the coldest days (-40C). Clothing and knobby or studded tires are key. I don't see it much differently than walking or skiing in the cold.

@conradnobert Pretty terrible position by UDI and their executive director. Their position is clearly not in the public interest. If you think gravel unpermitted parking lots are a reasonable use for a downtown then I recommend you read some Henry George. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Geo…
