Yes, the critic's job is different from the artist's job. Discerning taste is separate from having made something. You can make 1000 songs and have nothing interesting to say about a given album. I would much rather read Roger Ebert's criticism of a film than Will Smith

But I can follow a conversation and make myself understood. And if I *did* need it and wanted to properly learn the language, I would have a major leg up having been immersed as a child.

You can stick a kid in one, but he’ll still live in a world where everyone outside the school (and indeed all his friends within) speak English. So French won’t take because he doesn’t need it.

Everything about official bilingualism in Canada is built on myth. People can’t “just learn” a language they don’t need. Canada isn’t “built on” two equally-sized language groups. Bilingualism isn’t “necessary” to function at an elite level. It’s all just Laurentian folklore.
