Well I guess I'll be dissociating to ethereal ambient music this summer. I can't believe they're actually back this is incredible

@TwinCzin @hawksley It’s definitely subjective. For my video I cut it off at the turn of the 21st century. The fact there’s still dfw discourse a quarter-century after IJ makes it feel safe to say it’s been “enduring” in the culture imo

@hawksley @duncanc_ I think my exact question was "How much time has to pass before a book may be considered a "classic"?". (My ulterior motive was absolutely to be able to slip Infinite Jest in as a classic as we read through it.)

hey @duncanc_ loved your classic books you should know about video. i hope you DO make a video on infinite jest - me and my friends are all reading it as a book club right now and i’d love to do a watch party of your video on it as a ending celebration :)

A TikTok of AI Peter Griffin reading the eschaton chapter of infinite jest while minecraft and subway surfer plays in the background. I think this is the only way David foster Wallace intended his book to be consumed.

@artchad It makes sense why. It integrates AI luddism with climate change activism, which is easier to sell to moderates. The disintegration of PMC/white-collar work makes a lot more sense as a strategy, but radicals hate those guys

I don’t understand how mass amounts of people attach themselves to non issues. There are an unfathomable amount of ex-risks with AI, water use is not one of them. I don’t even know how that started. drop the plug and play leftist opinions and actually learn things.

@zermatist That other tweet must have been ragebait. I have absolutely no training or knowledge of music theory and jazz absolutely rocks. Particularly people like Guaraldi, Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, and Grant Green are totally accessible for ordinary listeners

Attn: everyone. Please stop giving your takes on "jazz" if the first thing you think of as "jazz" is the screaming, fence-ripping solos of late-career John Coltrane. The vast majority of jazz fans are into stuff like fusion-era Miles Davis and the Peanuts soundtrack music.

When this happened to me, AI video did not exist. It was just simple LLM rewriting of my script set to stock footage. Nowadays the content farms are a lot more sophisticated

I recommend my youtuber friend IMPERIAL's new video discussing AI plagiarism on youtube, a topic I've covered before after a similar experience being ripped off. youtube.com/watch?v=Q2Ak8w…

@sciad Fair enough. Automatically retreating to passive stimulation can definitely be a harmful use case. A shuffled playlist erratically shifting mental atmosphere all over the place

This isn’t an issue if done with intention. Music is an additional environmental stimulus that colors our experience and alters mood. An afternoon walk can be made more serene, sentimental, romantic The constant chatter of podcasts is the problem. It drowns out presence
science adventurer@sciad

a significant chunk of my gen got oneshotted by the ability to listen to music 24/7. I often opt to drive in silence or go on long walks without my phone to secure the gift of cognitive sovereignty and a clear head

This shouldn’t be done 24/7 but it’s a useful psychotechnology for modulating the conscious atmosphere. Ambient music is particularly good since there are no lyrics or earworms to attach to

@JJ_McCullough @SenbyJames @ShirleyStockar2 I was part of that grade 6 to 12. Indeed I stopped using it entirely and my skills atrophied But I can follow a conversation and make myself understood. And if I *did* need it and wanted to properly learn the language, I would have a major leg up having been immersed as a child.

@SenbyJames @ShirleyStockar2 They have those, they’re called French immersion schools and they don’t work. You can stick a kid in one, but he’ll still live in a world where everyone outside the school (and indeed all his friends within) speak English. So French won’t take because he doesn’t need it.

Another anglo explaining that anglos are too dumb to learn another language and somehow thinking he's proving that this apparently uniquely inept group of people should be in charge of everyone else who have more ability than them. 🤔

Everything about official bilingualism in Canada is built on myth. People can’t “just learn” a language they don’t need. Canada isn’t “built on” two equally-sized language groups. Bilingualism isn’t “necessary” to function at an elite level. It’s all just Laurentian folklore.

Imagine a low-dose psilocybin patch. Going about life with a whiff of geometry in the air. An extra touch of whimsy in every conversation. Never quite sure if that person in your peripheral is making a demon face at you, or if a shadow has just fallen on them weird.

The constant pumping of music into every public space, every idle second of sport, every supermarket and café, speaks to an underlying sickness, a kind of cultural mental illness. As a society we are allergic to silence, terrified of spending even one second with our own thoughts
