I keep thinking about how Daniel Kwan closed the conversation, billed as a talk centered on the question “can human storytelling survive the algorithm?” Kwan said that to learn more about AI is “to basically have to say goodbye to the future you thought was going to happen. And that requires a mourning process. I just want to acknowledge that for some of you this is normal and fine, you’ve heard all this stuff and it’s not a big deal. But for others, this is really hard stuff to handle. The fact that Hollywood might not happen exist anymore, the fact that all these institutions might be replaced by something else, we’re saying goodbye to the future, and there’s a little bit of grief in that. Who knows if it’s going to be good? Who knows if it’s going to be bad? But it is fundamentally going to change. Give yourself the space.”

Oscar winning filmmaker Daniel Kwan delivered a passionate plea and plan for how the entertainment industry can and should face AI’s Hollywood takeover during a Studio B conversation with Jaron Lanier on Friday. Threads claims their goal is to make a less angry twitter, sounds good right? I just want everyone who is jumping ship & joinin Threads to take a moment to reflect on what the long term consequences of well-intentioned algorithms can be when we don’t look at the bigger picture🧵

@Gm7_Photography I’d go even further and say it’s not the platform’s problem, it’s the entire systems problem. I believe people are capable of both great and terrible things, and their environment and whether their needs are being met determines the direction their behavior trends toward.

@Gm7_Photography And if/when you’re ready to re-engage, I want you to look into Adrienne Marie Brown’s books Pleasure Activism and Emergent Strategy, if you haven’t already. It might not click for you, but for me it reframed what it means to be an engaged citizen. Good lucky buddy 🤟🏻

@Gm7_Photography You are burnt out because the system is designed to burn you out. Take as much time as you need to heal, rest, and remind yourself of what you love. We can’t all be fully engaged all of the time. Thank you for caring enough to even get to the point of burning out.

it’s okay if you join threads, but I think we all need to be more intentional about moving into new platforms before they get irrevocably entangled w/our everyday lives. until we create platforms that actually appeal to our better selves, we should just disengage and touch 🌿🍃
