The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day:
Preston Road, the well-known street in Dallas, is older than Dallas itself. It's true. The route was already a well-used trail when John Neely Bryan, the founder of Dallas, used it on the way to establishing the community. The trail was favored by travelers because it followed the watershed ridge between the East Fork and the Elm Fork of the Trinity River and because there were no large streams to cross.
The rail began in what's now Grayson County at Holland Coffee's trading house on the Red River. That specific location is now under the waters of Lake Texoma. The trail led south roughly 100 miles to the ford on the Trinity River where John Neely Bryan decided to build his community. In 1840, the Republic of Texas ordered Col. William Cooke to lay out the Military Road and establish outposts all the way from Austin to Holland Coffee's place. The upper portion of that trail followed the already-established trail from Dallas to Coffee's trading post.
There was a warehouse at Coffee's Station that was named "Fort" Preston, possibly for William Preston, a young officer who was in charge of service and supply, but this is uncertain. What is certain is that, in 1845, Coffee had a town named Preston surveyed and platted around his trading post and very quickly even the bend in the Red River was called Preston's Bend. I should add that Preston, the town, was a notorious place of riotous debauchery and reckless behavior, such that even Coffee himself was killed in a knife fight there in 1846. But the southward trail leading from Preston, Texas to Dallas became known as the Preston Road. Countless people and cattle traveled the Preston Road before railroads came along, and even today Preston Road follows the path that John Neely Bryan laid out.
