Achievement unlocked! Am I a real ML researcher now? Seriously though, the guy makes for some interesting conversations and I've enjoyed several episodes of his podcast, but he kinda takes himself too seriously as well.

@alepiad Thank God! Because I really hate "3-month-ago-Piad", loved everything "2-month-ago-Piad" said and "1-week-ago-Piad" is still earning my trust.

Daily reminder that anything I posted here more than 3 months ago was thought of by someone different from who I am now. Don't hold me to any of that, because I most likely think differently now, and I can't nor want to rationalize any of it.

@dvdarias Lo he leído, está un poco exagerado, pero bueno, es impresionante igual. De todas formas, por lo que he visto hasta ahora en codeforces, dudo que GPT-4 sin ayuda resuelva estos problemas *hoy*, pero seguro hay un GPT-N que lo resuelve para N suficientemente grande.

Mis estudiantes de primer año llevan aprendiendo a programar 3 meses y acaban de tener su primer examen. Básicamente convertir de una base arbitraria a decimal, con algunos detalles adicionales. ChatGPT no pudo resolverlo. (Aunque, para ser justos, la mayoría de ellos tampoco).

@alepiad Dale un look al paper "arxiv 2303.12712", teniendo en cuenta las diferencias con v3.5, yo asumiría que v4 puede resolverlo.

Death is just an engineering problem that will be solved some day.

@alepiad The meaning of identity is not fixed, and it will always be evolving/changing. The same happens with death. Going back to the original poll, now I am pretty sure "death" will never be solved, because its meaning will evolve to the next unsolved state of consciousness.

@alepiad This raises another question. Is the same person the one that was revived with all the information, including the fact that he died, compared to the person that is revived excluding the information about the accident?

@alepiad I am assuming that, by the time we achieve the capacity to store full human consciousness information, we would also have the capacity to store it as soon as it is produced. Meaning the amount of information lost on an accidental death would be negligible.

@alepiad Agree, then let's take "running on some substrate" as the definition of alive and "impossible to run again on any substrate" as dead. Then, death will definitely be solved, we just need to find the way to store enough information about us to be able to run on a future substrate.

@dvdarias People are software. It just runs on a different substrate.
