@keahbone I have thought that many times. We served years together. I have a thank you clock for my elite status. 🤣

While serving on the Executive Committee I served with pastors and laymen from every state convention. From the smallest church to the largest, all had a voice. All served on committees and led in various ways. This “elites” narrative is childish & jealousy disguised as concern.

@MtZionAD33 Have you watched even a whole sermon from @DJ__Horton ? What if I told you this wasn't a topical sermon? You probably wouldn't believe it but a quick Google search of the Mill church might help you.

Pastor Allen getting tossed around for saying this is enough for me to know that my brother nailed it on the head. Here is an excerpt from a paper I wrote: Topical preaching is mainly found among churches that have no reverence for the things of God, and a direct result of eisegesis is building a church based on a high view of man and a low view of God. Entertainment, therefore, often becomes the tool to keep people in the church, and the truth of God is set aside in favor of moral relativism. The late Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899- 1981) summarized this concern well: "Light entertainment, easy familiarity, and jocularity are not compatible with a realization of the seriousness of the condition of the souls of all men by nature, the fact that they are lost and in danger of eternal perdition, and their consequent need of salvation. Not only that, such methods cannot bring out the Truth; and our business is to preach the Truth. These methods may affect people psychologically and in other respects, and they may lead to ‘decisions’; but our object is not merely to get decisions, it is to bring people to a knowledge of the Truth." Topical preaching, therefore, prioritizes immediate appeal and emotional engagement over faithful exposition, often reducing the pulpit to a platform for cultural trends rather than a place where God’s Word governs both message and method. As Charles Koller reminds us, “The preacher must lead his people into the text, not away from it.” This does not mean that topical preaching is inherently wrong; one can occasionally preach topically while still maintaining an expository approach. However, this method should not become the normative practice. In contrast, expository preaching seeks to faithfully draw out the meaning of Scripture, allowing God Himself to speak through the text rather than shaping the text to human preferences.

The SBC has a much deeper problem than just women pastors. It doesn’t even understand preaching (as a whole, not every SBC pastor. I know several GREAT preachers). By and large it’s traded models like Spurgeon, DMLJ, Broadus, for plagiarism and props.

@cuatronelson Jesus sitting on a hillside [27] “Consider how the wildflowers grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these. SBC pastors trying to score points, "Jesus needs to learn to preach without props"

@dwight_easler @cuatronelson @DJ__Horton If you need props to explain the meaning of the text then it isn’t sufficient and able to fully train and equip the believer (2 Tim 3:16-17). I don’t know him but I do know that he is exhibiting seeker sensitive behavior. Which is the opposite of faithful exposition.

@cuatronelson Yeah, Jesus never used familiar illustrations during sermons. This isn't helpful but you can live with your judgements of others.

Yeah so I have a strong conviction that the pulpit is not a place for toys. It is a place for men to wield the Sword. I have a high view of preaching like my baptist forefathers. I don’t know DJ. I’m sure he’s a nice brother.
Dwight Easler@dwight_easler

@cuatronelson Yeah you don't know him that's obvious. I do know @DJ__Horton and I know him as one of the most faithful expositional preachers in the nation. He used a golf club for an illustration. I know many expositors who should learn how to illustrate the text better.

@bartbarber Good grief. Almost every pastor in the SBC has their pay reported to the congregation. It's not that difficult

This is related, I think, to the Form-990 motions. I think there is a significant head count of SBC messengers whose rationale goes like this:

What's happening right now with the question of pastoral qualifications in the SBC is, in my opinion, very healthy. The Law Amendment came out and people falsely conflated mechanism with objective—if you don't like this WAY of doing it, then I accuse you of not wanting to do it.

As Al Mohler and Clint Pressley again call for the SBC to end once and for all the confusion on the office of pastor, and Heath Lambert has spoken to this as well, let me quote my friend @jm_larue : “(In Orlando 2026) Jeff Iorg will scare messengers again about the potential of a lawsuit of a female pastor suing the convention, so we can’t stand on what the Bible says. That was so embarrassing.” This can’t happen again. We need the Law/Sanchez amendment or something else similar in nature passed. We may finally be able to move on from this EVERY YEAR!

Cathy and I were in the cancer center today for regular appointments. It had been a few weeks, it felt like seeing old friends. Everyone there knows Cathy by name and are genuinely happy to see her. They came out to the waiting room to catch up, it’s a real blessing. But…

I heard a seminary rep tell a group of people recently the seminary will waive the lack of an undergraduate degree as a requirement for an MDiv if someone has ____ years in ministry and is over the age of _____. I spent my youth pursuing an education. Desperation cheapens.
