We are at the final day of @mathsweek and there are events on: in the Botanic Gardens and Castlecomer Discovery Park. Of course, it is well known that plants hate solving quadratics - it gives them square roots. mathsweek.ie/2025/events/

On the show we talked about this Primary School Certificate problem from 1962 with with maths teacher and author Oliver Murphy. Can you solve it? #MathsWeek #MathsWeek 2025

@PatKennyNT I have managed to collect some of the maths primary cert papers from the 1950s and 1960s. They are available at archive.maths.nuim.ie/staff/dmalone/… - scroll down below the leaving and junior cert papers. If people have access to others, please get in touch!

We're near the end of @mathsweek, and people have been putting in lots of effort. As @ColinTheMathmo points out, when you decide to do something, always give 100%. Unless you're giving blood... Of course, soon the organisers & presenters will be suffering from the aftermath.

Yesterday, I walked into the room and saw +, −, × and ÷ sitting around a table. "Yep", I thought to myself, “all the signs were there." @mathsweek

In @mathsweek, today is the day that we walk from Dunsink Observatory to Broombridge and sing Happy Birthday to the quaternions. I once bought a telepathic abacus for a friend's birthday. They didn't really like it, but it's the thought that counts.

Lots of people like looking at fractals, but they don't make good friends - they are *so* full of themselves! @mathsweek

A student in the front puts their hand up and asks "What about double positives?" The lecturer responds, "Well, in English, a double positive is always a positive." A voice from the back of the class pipes up, "Yeah, yeah.''.

While chatting about @mathsweek, I was reminded that linguistics can be mathematical. A joke in that spirit: A large class is learning about the importance of clear writing. The lecturer says "Be careful with double negatives; in English a double negative makes a positive." ...

Each year, @mathsweek is a few weeks after the equinox. So, this year some mathematicians were given the job of studying time. They started out by counting seconds. However, they quickly got bored and after 24 hours they called it a day. @DIASDunsink

An raibh a fhios agat go bhfuil trí chineál daoine ar domhan? Seo iad: daoine ar féidir leo comhaireamh agus daoine nach féidir leo.
