Tim Dillon on MAGA: “It’s the greatest con in history, truly. To run as America First and you’re gonna take care of America and then turn around and go all of these things daycare, Medicare, we have nothing to do with that, we’re fighting wars. It is the greatest scam in history”

I once had a patient tell me that I look like JD Vance and that’s the closest I’ve ever come to jumping out of an ambulance.

La femme merveilleuse invisible
A scene from Looking for Richard, Al Pacino’s documentary about Shakespeare. This man, homeless, a beggar, someone most people would walk past without a second glance, someone not thought to be worth a dime, speaks about Shakespeare with remarkable clarity and perspective.

The breathtaking hypocrisy of this is off the charts. Trump’s ex-wife was killed too. But not by ISIS. She fell down the stairs at home. The day before she was to testify to his malfeasance. He buried her on his golf course. He was no longer with her at the time. He’d left her to shack up with his pregnant girlfriend. Who was donated to him by Jeffrey Epstein. When SHE gave birth he was sleeping with a Porn Star. But hey, Joe Kent remarried four and a half years after Isis killed the mother of his kids that he’d been raising alone…

Trump when questioned on Joe Kent: “I’m not a fan of the guy... his wife was killed. He remarried fairly quickly”

"A professional soldier understands that war means killing people, war means maiming people, war means families left without fathers and mothers. All you have to do is hold your first dying soldier in your arms, and have that terribly futile feeling that his life is flowing out and you can't do anything about it. Then you understand the horror of war. Any soldier worth his salt should be antiwar. And still there are things worth fighting for." -General H. Norman Schwarzkopf Jr.

Tom Nichols is not being cruel. He is applying the minimum standard the office has always required. The Secretary of Defense is not a political surrogate. He is the republic's voice to its military and to the world - the person who stands before grieving families, allied governments, and an observing adversary and projects the moral weight of a nation that takes its commitments seriously. Hegseth has shown repeatedly he cannot meet that test. Dismissing coverage of fallen troops as media spite. Deflecting when composure and candor were required. Treating public accountability as optional at the exact moments it is most obligatory. Better men exist. The office demands one. The troops absorbing the cost of decisions made under this Pentagon's leadership deserve a secretary who understands what solemn accountability actually looks like... not one who has to be reminded that the fallen are not a talking point.

Pete Hegseth, if he does not resign, should at least get out of the way and let better men than him talk to the nation and to the press. theatlantic.com/newsletters/20…
