Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams said the Department of Small Business Development has provided about R79.6 million in financial support to spaza shop owners across South Africa through the Spaza Shop Support Fund. Do you know anyone that has benefited from this?

📢Fancy a 60K finder's fee?🫰🏾 KFC Africa is doubling down on its commitment to South African growth with the launch of KFC: The Next 100, an ambitious initiative calling on property professionals, municipalities, developers and communities to help identify the next wave of restaurant locations. A R60,000 finder’s fee for successful site recommendations remains on offer for ordinary South Africans who identify locations that lead to opened restaurants. We are tired of investigations that disappear into filing cabinets while those implicated face no consequences! @BuildOneSA demands the immediate release of the @GautengDED investigation report. GDED & its implementing partner @FamilyTreeHold have failed township businesses!

The government has been urged to be transparent about the R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund (SSSF), amid concern about the potential mismanagement of the project that was launched last year to empower South African-owned township and rural spaza shops. #SpazaShopSupportFund #Corruption #Transparency Read on tinyurl.com/muxfs598

We spent the day in Olievenhoutbosch. This shop owner runs a business in a structure that was illegal built on a road reserve. She is one of several foreign nationals that conduct business in this area. We are scouting for trading space for registered South African nationals. We’ve identified three land parcels in Olievenhoutbosch that will be allocated to traders. @CityTshwane

B-Well’s refill model gains ground in township stores. B‑well has begun rolling out a flexible cooking‑oil refill model in selected township stores as households continue to feel the strain of rising living costs. With cooking‑oil prices still around 4% higher year‑on‑year in February 2026, basic staples remain increasingly out of reach for many families. In response, the brand’s new Smartfill initiative gives shoppers the ability to buy smaller, more affordable quantities - an option fast gaining traction among cash‑constrained consumers. RESEARCH - SPAZA SHOPS BEAT BIG RETAIL South Africa’s retail sector grew strongly in 2025, but the biggest surprise came from traditional trade. NielsenIQ’s State of the Retail Nation report shows spaza shops and independent retailers are growing faster than large supermarket chains. Consumers spent about R683.3bn on fast-moving consumer goods during the year. While modern trade still dominates total sales, spaza outlets are expanding rapidly as shoppers buy smaller quantities more frequently. With more than 140,000 spaza outlets compared with about 11,000 modern stores, accessibility is driving growth. Analysts say spaza shops are becoming increasingly competitive on price, convenience and location, reshaping how FMCG brands compete across South Africa’s retail landscape. New Opportunity!🚨 The Imara Artisan SMME Fund has launched. South Africa’s first fund purpose-built for artisan trade businesses. A R300 billion funding gap is keeping plumbers, electricians, builders and other artisan SMMEs from growing. Most can’t access fair financing, wait 45-90 days to get paid, and struggle to fund tools and materials. Imara, backed by Allan Gray Makers and E Squared Investments, offers: ✅ Asset rentals — access tools and equipment without upfront cash ✅ Material financing — get project materials without immediate payment ✅ Invoice discounting — get paid immediately after completing work Goal: 20,000 artisan microbusinesses empowered. R8 in social value for every R1 invested. Watch the full breakdown with Prince Nwadeyi 👇
