Tales of Ape Harbour - Chapter 4
The Cantina
Skip arrives in front of the cantina. He hunches over with his hands on his knees and gasps for air, but sees lights on the ground and looks up. The big bright neon sign with the cantina name, “The Lost Treasure,” was perched on top of the roof. Colorful light bulb chains were hanging from the entryway, illuminating the night. He walks to the front entrance and hears loud music playing from inside. Peeking in, the place never appears like anything special. It certainly is not like the upscale establishments a few blocks over with their high end liquors and wines, but he and Floki liked going there and had turned into a regular meeting place over the years. Something about the secretive clientele and feelings of danger and potential adventure had always appealed to him. Walking through the front doors, Skips’ nostrils were assaulted with the ever present aroma that permeated the air; a mix of spilled beer, old smoke and the remnants of past fights and bad nights. Looking around, he thought he saw Floki, but couldn't tell for sure. The alcove style seating always made it tough to know who was there. He pushed his way past a waiter with an overladen tray of empties. Skip gave a nod to a few guys pounding beers at the bar, and was able to dance around the surly waitress who might spill the drinks and charge him later for them. Chuckling to himself he ducked, avoiding a chair flying in his direction and nearly fell down, but regained his balance. Ready to give someone a piece of his mind, he turned to his right just in time to register the loud voices shouting at each other. The tone was getting heated and hostile. It seemed like a fight could erupt at any time, and he kept searching for Floki.
Finally arriving at the alcove and confirming it was really him, Skip slid onto the seat on the other side of the table. “Sup bro,” he said in Floki’s direction, not sure if he had noticed or heard him yet. “Hey!” Skip yelled, being rewarded with Floki’s head spinning towards him with a look of surprise. “Whoa, scared me there bro.” Says Floki. He looks at Skip and see’s that he is drenched in water. “Dude, what happened to you, why are you all wet?” “Oh man, that’s exactly what I want to talk to you about. It’s been a crazy day bro,” said Skip. He notices a glass of water and takes a sip of it to calm his pounding heart. “Tell me about it. I’ve had one of the worst days in my life,” says Floki. “What do you mean..what happened to you?” Asks Skip. Just as Floki starts to answer, Flora the waitress comes by. “Well boys, how are you two doing today?” She looks at the two and steps back a couple feet. “Whoa, what happened to you guys, been a long day?” “Yup, you said it.” They responded to Flora. “How about a drink?” She said, “A round of beers and two shots of the good stuff.” Skip responds. “By good stuff, he means your bourbon.” Floki interjected. “I know what he meant, you guys are here every Friday and never buy the good stuff.” She spat back at him then turned and headed to the bar.
Skip turns to Floki and says. “Okay you go first, what happened?” “After you visited, my boss fired me because I couldn’t get the work done in time. He was not amused at all of course, about seeing you again with the energy drink, talking with me while working.” “Man, I’m sorry to hear about that and especially if I had anything to do with you getting fired,” Said Skip. “No worries bro, it’s actually all good. I had time to think about our conversation and I may have overreacted, but actually our talk hit me deep. I don’t want to do this shitty job anyway. I need to change and do something different with my life, and hopefully find a way to pay my bills and help my parents.” Flora comes back with the drinks and places them in front of the two. She says to Skip. “Do you want to open up a tab?” He was just staring blankly at Floki, trying to comprehend everything he said through the blaring of the music, but he couldn't hear Flora. Floki started waving his hand and snapping his fingers in front of Skip's face. “Hey, are you alright there buddy? Oh, sorry about that! “Yeah, let's open a tab.” He says. Skip points his finger in the air and makes a circle gesture with it, another round on me!” “Sure, I’ll be back in a bit.” Says Flora.
Floki knew the expression on Skip’s face and assumed there was something important on his mind. “Okay Skip, tell me what happened and how did you get all wet?” Floki asked. Skip recalled how he had fallen in the water. “After my plunge I noticed something in the mud and when I searched for it, this metal thing got stuck between my toes.” Skip showed it to Floki. “At first I had no clue what it could be, but then I saw it resembles the emblem on my cap. I’m really confused as to what this means.” Floki looked at the item and matched it up against Skips hat and said. “The dimensions are similar for sure.” Skip inspects the object. “Dude, do you think it’s gold? Have you ever seen real gold?” He asks. “I don’t know. I’ve seen things of similar colors but it’s hard to say if it’s real gold. I have heard ancient apes probably had a ton of gold though.” Floki answers. Skip barely hears what Floki is saying. He is focused on the object and trying to twist it. It’s not flexible, but when he slid his fingers along the narrow end, he felt a grove that was hardly visible. He wonders if it had any significance.
Flora came by with the next round of drinks and saw Skip showing the object to Floki. “Whatcha got there, Skip?” “Oh not much, just a little something I found earlier today.” He quickly tucked it away in his pocket. “Oh, ok I get it. I guess it’s top secret.” She says while placing a hand on her hip. “Well, hopefully it has nothing to do with your grandpa’s stories. You know how apes don’t like hearing anything about that kind of stuff around here.” She put the drinks down on the table. Skip gave a nod to Floki that it was time to head out, then he looked up at Flora and said. “Actually, I think we're ready to close the tab.” “What, you guys just got here?” Flora asks. Skip looks at Floki who was barely keeping his eyes open. “Flora, you know we enjoy being here as much as possible, but look at us, we are a mess and Floki is falling asleep. Like you said earlier, it’s been a long day.” Flora places the bill on the table and Skip reaches into his pocket for money. A few blue rose petals got lodged into his wallet and she noticed them. “Where did you get those?” She asked. “I got them down by the river trail.” Responds Skip. “What, I thought that the trail was closed off. Is that where you got all wet?” She continues on. “...You guys may not know this, but when I am not working here, I’m usually at my other job helping my parent’s out at their flower shop. I've been researching plants and learned a lot about them. The thing is, I have never seen that type of rose before. Do you mind if I have some to analyze?” “Of course!” Skip hands the petals to Flora and says. “I hope these can help you discover some cool things.” “Thank you, Skip! I appreciate it!” Flora smiles, then turns around and leaves. Skip and Floki finish their glasses and start heading out, but Skip looks down at the floor and sees Floki’s belongings. “Hey Floki, is that your satchel and broomstick lying over there?” “Yeah it is, good looking out!” Floki grabbed his things and they left the cantina, heading back to their homes for the night.
To be continued next Wednesday ...
