I see people saying we need a CB all the time. I do agree but I don't think people really realize how specific the type of CB we need is. How do we want to play? We want to press bait – inviting pressure onto us so that we can play through it. Through this phase, the CBs will arguably be the most important players. What does this mean? It means we need to have CBs that are insanely calm and confident in possession who also has the ability to break lines. ----------------------------------------- Playing like this will inevitably lead to a lot of game states where we will dominate possession so much that other teams will be pinned back – largely because they don't want to give us space as we will kill them in it. What does this mean? It means we will have incredibly large spaces to defend ourselves were we to lose possession of the ball. This again means that we need CBs both physically and intelligently capable of defending these large spaces quickly. ----------------------------------------- A 3rd part is with the hyper focus in the Premier League on set-pieces, combined with all the times you will inevitably be pinned back yourself, you require players who can defend the box. Your CBs are your main defenders so they need to be capable of it. While Colwill coming back solves a lot of our issues – such as being possessionally confident, line breaking and box defending – he's not a world class defender of large spaces. A lot of people rate Fofana but he's not a good enough passer of the ball, nor is he super good defending the box. Chalobah isn't good enough at anything. What we really need to partner Colwill is someone who can dominantly defend spaces while being dominant in possession. Box defending doesn't HAVE to be world class as Colwill already is – even though he ideally would be, of course. Jeremy Jacquet was this exact profile – which proves to me that they are aware of what they need. This also explains why we won't just sign a CB for the sake of it. We're not just looking for a CB, we're looking for THE CB to help us take that final step to greatness. A long-term partner for Colwill.
