Japan Air Self-Defense Force
JASDF, in coordination with ATLA, supported the first flight of the stand-off electronic warfare aircraft🛩️📡. We will continue working toward its introduction to improve capabilities in the electromagnetic domain and to strengthen the cross-domain operations capabilities.

I’m not out here calling for the wholesale destruction of our historic structures, but the heritage legislation exists for them to be preserved by the commonwealth. So why get contemporary service requirements tied up in the equation?

It’s an obtuse comparison to draw, but bear with me: could you imagine if we retained ships, aircraft and vehicles with a similar reverence for structures and estates.

There’s a point at which estate transitions from being managed out of operational necessity, to being held out of bureaucratic convenience/legacy. It shouldn’t be controversial to say resources must prioritise the contemporary workforce, instead of property we can’t divest.
Jennifer Parker@JAParker29

Selling defence bases like Victoria Barracks & HMAS Penguin isn’t just about money — it’s about how Defence prioritises focus and capacity. Large, unwieldy estates can pull people away from core warfighting tasks. But not every decision is simple. Full piece 👇 🔗 abc.net.au/news/2026-03-1… @DefenceUwa @LowyInstitute @NSC_ANU

A fun game to play is to watch War Machine on Netflix and call out all the locations that are very obviously Point Cook or Laverton

I’ve always had an appreciation for this brief shot towards the end of The Empire Strikes Back. Such a unique angle of the interior of the Millennium Falcon. Peter Suschitzky’s cinematography has always been one of the best parts of this particular film.

@Wigles5 I’ve got to imagine there’s balance and stability benefits to distributing mass to wingtips rather than concentrating in the fuselage, plus wing flex/fatigue is sometimes better served having weight further out.

@eamonhamilton With the wing tip rotating designs (like v22 etc) I've never understood why they haven't mounted the engines in/on the fuselage and then run shafts to the props. Or have electric motors running the props driven by a generator on the fuselage mounted engine(s)

This is rad & I think there’s some cool uncrewed applications, but would caution against any dreams of this yielding a VTOL transport in the 100,000lb gross weight range. The power required to lift that weight would likely destroy the austere airfields you’re hoping to land on.

@Wigles5 I also have to keep reminding myself that it’s carrying two propulsion systems rather than using a clutch gearbox like an F-35B, and while that probably cuts down on *some* complexity, it also means it’s carrying a literal tonne of deadweight during key phases.

For a smaller CSAR, AME, or rapid logistics platform, I think there’s some amazing potential; especially if it can project from LHD ships.

Not to mention the weight on wheels getting the aircraft bogged (unless it’s a prepared surface). 100,000lb puts you between a C27J & C130J, which gives some indication of the airstrips it could/couldn’t operate from.
