@ArthurCDent How do they..., what is the... never mind. I don't want to know. I welcome the thinking machines. We kinda did this to ourselves. I figured at some point during my thesis that I will have to read 15 papers per day forever just to stay on top of the literature in my little sphere.

@MarkoPrasek Meanwhile when I A/B different LLMs (eg Claude, Codex) evaluating and scoring documents for rigour, quality etc, I got a correlation of .97. Even on the individual subsections.

@ArthurCDent I love it. The comments should be printed out and displayed somewhere. Reminds me of the reviews I recently got. Reviewer 1 said my math was elegant, Reviewer 2 said my math was overly simplistic. I want to frame and display these comments more than any degree.

@ArthurCDent Great post. I'd go even further and argue that just because something was adaptive in a certain environment it's not necessarily adaptive now. See our sweet tooth: adaptive in a world where high calory, sweet food was scarce but very much a problem in our post-scarcity world.

The primary conceit of the modern liberal is the belief in their heart that something like slavery is obviously, transparently morally repugnant and that therefore any people, including those in the past, should be able to see that. The only way to accurately understand the world is to have the courage to say that this is not correct. It’s not at all obvious. I would expect that if you played out human history 10 million times, you’d have slavery in almost every instantiation. This is because it would very clearly not be obvious to early people that slavery is universally wrong. In fact, I think it would be obvious to early people that slavery makes a lot of sense and so you’d have to work very hard over many thousands of years to develop a universal ethics that forbids it. This is not a minor confusion. I think it’s a pretty important aspect of the way modern people conceive of and evaluate history. But you can reject it!

Cassie makes a strong case here. I don’t think revealed preferences are “demolished” — individual freedom is still a good in itself and mostly economically efficient. But there are limiting factors. Behavioural impulse control is one, collective action problems are another.

this raises a problem with the concept of “revealed preferences.” The concept is often used to say “people don’t know what they really want,” but “people want multiple things in tension, and what they *do* may come at the expense of many important desires” is equally likely

If you don’t see this, imagine the tweet “Hey did you know almost all tribal societies were really violent? They valorised killing and raping their enemies. So how do YOU know those things are bad actually? Are you saying they were all dumb?”. Not a very clever argument.
