I liked the Odyssey and Illiad when I read them years ago. I liked Herodotus and Aeschylus and other old texts as well. I guess in the most abstract way it’s a kind of cultural heritage of the contemporary West…. 1/2

@ArthurCDent @GurusPod The sliding scale of most likely to least likely to be a grift has these kind of one-off churches set up by a single pastor and his wife (the usual pattern) at one end and something like the official state sponsored Lutheran church of Denmark at the other.

@DavidLandrum6 @YouTube There have been great adaptions of all manner of historical things. I don’t think it demonstrates cultural affinity. Classical civilisation was very very different from us. As different as Norse Vikings or Celts.

But it’s at such a far remove — it feels so impossibly distant — I think any personal identification of a modern Westerner with it is basically fantasy.
In contrast to, say, Jane Austen, Daniel Defoe or Thomas Cromwell. Strange, but identifiable in a personal way.

There's just no way the actual audience rating is 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Metacritic has the movie at a 5.3/10 user score, Letterboxd has it at 4.3 and IMDB has it at 8.3/10.
Rotten Tomatoes is removing negative reviews at the behest of the studio.

The Odyssey has officially overtaken The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King on Rotten Tomatoes. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey sits at 95% reviews, edging past The Return of the King, which holds 94%. On the audience side, The Odyssey also leads so far with a 97% Popcornmeter score from verified ratings, compared to The Return of the King’s 86% audience score.

I think it's just that marriage used to be a very strong norm, so people used to get married as soon as they were in a semi-serious relationship, and everyone did, which naturally resulted in high rates of divorce once legal and social impediments were lifted. My impression is that in our generation people wait more before they get married and marriage is more a high-class thing, which naturally results in lower rates of divorce.

I wonder to what extent this is a result of selection though. The marriage rate has decreased a lot since 1980, so it could be that, relative to married people in 1980, people who still get married today are selected for characteristics that make divorce less likely.

What the public doesn't know: Divorce is down since the early 1980s (to 1960s levels!), which now brings the odds of divorcing well below 1-in-2. I talked about this w/@PostOpinions👇🏽
