@ArthurCDent How do they..., what is the... never mind. I don't want to know. I welcome the thinking machines. We kinda did this to ourselves. I figured at some point during my thesis that I will have to read 15 papers per day forever just to stay on top of the literature in my little sphere.

@MarkoPrasek Meanwhile when I A/B different LLMs (eg Claude, Codex) evaluating and scoring documents for rigour, quality etc, I got a correlation of .97. Even on the individual subsections.

@ArthurCDent I love it. The comments should be printed out and displayed somewhere. Reminds me of the reviews I recently got. Reviewer 1 said my math was elegant, Reviewer 2 said my math was overly simplistic. I want to frame and display these comments more than any degree.

“The single strongest personality predictor [of conspiracy thinking] is narcissism. Narcissists are particularly prone to conspiracy theories because they have a strong need for uniqueness, are prone to paranoia, and can also be remarkably gullible.” stevestewartwilliams.com/p/12-things-ev…

@justalexoki Nietzsche's "fanbase" is like 98% people who have read little or no Nietzsche, Rand's fanbase is mostly people who haven't read anything BUT Rand, and Marx's fanbase is mostly people who are "Marxist" only in the loose sense that they are online and mentally ill.

@jasonetheridge Yep, there’s very good reasons not to use it for that, even though it can. Writing is a way to think, after all.

@ArthurCDent You'd have thought so, given that really is what it should specialise in! I never use it for that myself; if one can write, why bother?

The battery revolution is amazing. Batteries have almost completely displaced gas in Queensland and all it took was two short years!

@ArthurCDent Great post. I'd go even further and argue that just because something was adaptive in a certain environment it's not necessarily adaptive now. See our sweet tooth: adaptive in a world where high calory, sweet food was scarce but very much a problem in our post-scarcity world.

@aryehazan Does any prison system in the world run at a net profit? Is that why criminals are imprisoned?

@ArthurCDent holding persons agains their will and forcing them to work for you profit I don't think I subjected "kind of " to undue duress 😅

@ArthurCDent @illegal_lemur There is also heavy drug use. I'm not saying he is not neuro divergent (autist, narcissist etc.) and an idiot in many respects, but on top of that he is also cooking his noggin with twitter and drugs, and that probably doesn't help.

Cassie makes a strong case here. I don’t think revealed preferences are “demolished” — individual freedom is still a good in itself and mostly economically efficient. But there are limiting factors. Behavioural impulse control is one, collective action problems are another.
Cassie Pritchard@hecubian_devil

this raises a problem with the concept of “revealed preferences.” The concept is often used to say “people don’t know what they really want,” but “people want multiple things in tension, and what they *do* may come at the expense of many important desires” is equally likely

@ArthurCDent I'll admit I'm looking forward to the time when all these statues of him are torn down. I'm as far from anarchist as one can get, but this appalling aggrandisement by his cultists is just nauseating.

@illegal_lemur Fair! It could also be a “why not both scenario”. He definitely has no fkn idea how cringe most of his posturing is. But then again, that is also a mistake a simple chud would make. Let 1000 theories bloom.

@ArthurCDent Oh yeah he's absolutely also a cunt, the "bitches money no taxes party" post seems like a major social cognition failure though, or at least something that a person with social self-awareness would not post.

@illegal_lemur IDK, picking public fights, accusing a cave rescuer of being a paedophile, doing Nazi-adjacent gestures, RTing race-and-IQ accounts… These aren’t social-cognition failures, and not something autistic people as a group tend to be more prone to. They’re clumsy status moves.

If you don’t see this, imagine the tweet “Hey did you know almost all tribal societies were really violent? They valorised killing and raping their enemies. So how do YOU know those things are bad actually? Are you saying they were all dumb?”. Not a very clever argument.

So, IMO the OP is invoking both a fallacy and a strawman to dress up a pretty conventional point as brave iconoclasm. Really does not seem like an interesting account, despite trying very hard to be one.
